FFXIV Berlin Fan Festival Unveils Everwcold (FFXIV 8.0) Tank Job and Raids
Final Fantasy XIV’s second EU Fan Festival in Berlin delivered a dense set of reveals for the upcoming expansion Everwcold (also identified as FFXIV 8.0). Square Enix and the team behind the MMO used the opening keynote to show new story framing, introduce a brand-new tank job, outline how progression and raid difficulty will work in 8.0, and confirm multiple crossover events—plus a dated release plan for a variety of updates leading into 2027.
Everwcold’s opening cinematic and the Bastion job reveal
A newly expanded trailer opened the event, offering fresh scenes tied to Everwcold and a first look at a new job introduced for the expansion: Bastion. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida appeared on stage in a cosplay based on the job and kept it throughout the keynote.
Story kickoff: life in the Fourth, above a world frozen in place
The expansion’s adventure takes place in a reflection of the original world called the Fourth. There, a complete glaciation has immobilized lands, seas, and continents, pushing people to seek shelter in high places. Many have abandoned life on the ground and moved aboard a massive flying ship or into floating cities above the frozen world. The keynote also teased an incoming threat that will upset this fragile balance and require players to protect the precarious peace.
Bastion details: starting level, weapon, and combat identity
Bastion is the first new job announced for Everwcold. It is a primary tank job playable exclusively through the Advanced Action mode. The job starts at level 90, and its introduction quest begins in Limsa Lominsa.
On the lore side, the royal family ruling the island of Elslent in the North Ocean preserved and passed down an ancestral martial art built around the weapon Skyltborg. The weapon includes a transformation mechanism that allows switching between melee and ranged attacks. Certain actions can also grant defensive benefits and healing for both Bastion and its allies.
The second and final job for the expansion will be revealed later during the next Fan Festival in Japan.
New flying cities: Naglfar and Hringhornl
Key locations shown included the water arch ship Naglfar, a gigantic flying vessel with a central crystal whose role remains a question. Its accompanying city, Fargarth, was presented as a lively settlement within the ship. Notably, the music used in the video is not what players will hear in the final game; the main composer Soken reportedly made that music in a single night specifically for the trailer.
Another major environment reveal was the fire arch ship Hringhornl. The huge floating city blends furnaces and molten metals, pairing fiery tones with the colder hues of the surrounding frozen world.
8.0 progression freedom: choose the order of three zones (and leveling will scale)
To give players more control over pacing, the main scenario’s progression will allow different players to choose the order in which they tackle three subsequent zones after a certain point. Because that freedom can create level gaps, the development team confirmed a new balancing mechanism.
The keynote stated that the three zones and the instanced dungeons from version 8.0 can be explored in any order. Enemy and dungeon difficulty will automatically adapt to keep the experience consistent, while equipment rewards have been fully redesigned to support flexible progression paths.
Season system replaces the old Memoquartz routine (no extra cost)
Yoshida also revisited a new “season” system intended to replace the traditional Memoquartz cycle. He limited details at this event, saying more information would come during the next Fan Festival in Japan. He also emphasized that despite the “season” label, it would not add additional player costs beyond the standard subscription.
Before launch: a special broadcast focused on the Advanced Action mode
A special stream is planned ahead of Evercold’s release. Yoshida described it as a multi-hour broadcast and said it will go deep on the Advanced Action mode for each job.
Armory update: copy your max item level to other max-level jobs
The armory system is set for a major change. Once a player reaches the maximum job level—level 110—they will be able to copy their highest item level from one max-level job to other jobs that are also at maximum level.
This feature will be available only at that final stage of progression. The goal is to help players align high-level gear across jobs without rebuilding equipment from scratch for each one.
However, the keynote clarified that the copy does not include extra stats from Materia, meaning players still need dedicated pieces if they want fully optimized gear.
Action animation switching: customization expands across 8.0 and 8.1
Everwcold introduces a system to customize the appearance animations of character actions. In 8.0, players will be able to customize several general animations—explicitly including Teleport and Return—by assigning alternative appearances earned in-game. Three new teleport animations were shown as examples.
In 8.1, the team will extend the feature to job actions, enabling alternative animations for some signature skills. Yoshida also suggested older job animations could be reused by assigning them to specific actions. He jokingly reiterated that “changing animations doesn’t increase DPS.”
Rollout will be gradual: only a small set of actions will be customizable at first, with the number increasing over subsequent updates.
Character creation upgrades coming in 8.1 and beyond
Additional character customization options were announced following the North American Fan Festival. Starting in 8.1 and continuing afterward, players will gain more options per race.
The team specifically mentioned toggling race-specific distinctive traits such as the black nose for Lalafell and Viera, and warpaint for Miqo’te. More race-specific patterns and options are also planned, with visuals shown to preview the changes.
Open-world improvements: a new “World Raid” type, plus optional auto-travel
The team is working on improvements to open-world gameplay (non-instanced content). A new large-scale activity called World Raid is in development, allowing players to join major raids directly in normal zones, drawing on experience from exploration-style content such as Eureka.
Alongside other improvements, the team confirmed a major update is planned for after Evercold’s launch window. It will include an automatic movement system and quest destination guidance.
While travel automation had been avoided previously, the team said it will now be implemented with player comfort in mind, referencing current mobile-game trends. The assistance will be fully optional and can be turned on or off at any time. The feature requires significant data processing to determine comfortable travel routes, so deployment is planned during the 8.X update series.
8-player raids get a new difficulty tier between Normal and Savage
A three-tier difficulty structure was confirmed for the new 8-player raid series. Historically, traditional 8-player raids had roughly 85% success in Normal and only 14–20% success in “Savage,” creating concern about a divide between players who can clear for gear and those who can’t.
From 8.0, an intermediate difficulty will sit between Normal and Savage. The new tier will be at a difficulty level lower than or comparable to Extreme content. The intent is to smooth progression as Normal → new tier → Savage.
Players who already access Savage will be able to continue doing so without having to tackle the new intermediate step. The intermediate tier is aimed at players who find Savage too demanding but want a bridge stage.
On rewards, completing Savage will grant raid gear immediately, similar to the current approach. A new “seasonal gear” concept will also be added, where upgrading seasonal equipment helps players gradually approach raid-equivalent power.
Details on all three tiers and their rollout schedule will be covered in a future Letter Live focused on Evercold before launch.
Inter-Data Center party finder: Chaos and Light combined starting October 12 (Japan)
Recruitment for group matching will expand to include all regions. Worlds from the Chaos and Light data center regions will be pooled together to increase matchmaking chances, removing the need to move to another data center to find parties.
This cross-region grouping begins in Japan on October 12, following a 24-hour maintenance. After stabilization, tests are planned for North America, Europe, and other regions.
Chocobo companion overhaul: dungeon support and a new breeding system
The Chocobo companion system is getting a major update after a long wait. Players will be able to bring Chocobos into dungeons in groups composed of two players and two Chocobos. To avoid tuning complexity, Chocobo characteristics will be automatically adjusted to match the content being run.
The team is also working to simplify how the system is used, including the possibility of changing the role assigned to the Chocobo.
Chocobo breeding will be fully reworked while keeping the current rank structure. Dungeon access for the Chocobos will arrive with 8.1, while the breeding system revamp will roll out in 8.2.
Alliance raid: Evangelion crossover “Ghosts of Desire”
A new 24-player alliance raid tied to Evangelion was detailed further. The crossover is titled Ghosts of Desire.
A new video reiterated that production is currently underway. The project also includes participation by Mahiro Maeda, described as closely connected to Evangelion through design and involvement with the Rebuild saga. He has also worked on Mad Max: Fury Road. No further crossover specifics were shared at the time.
8-player raid crossover: Final Fantasy VII Remake “Beyond the River of Life”
The new 8-player raid series was announced with One-Winged Angel, the iconic music associated with Sephiroth. It will be a crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series and titled Par-delà la rivière de la vie (Beyond the River of Life).
Naoki Hamaguchi appeared as a surprise guest and shared enthusiasm for the raid.
The raid is scheduled to begin shortly after Evercold’s release, with the related patch listed as 8.01. It will follow the usual structure of three groups of four raids. The scenario is credited to Motomu Toriyama, with the Final Fantasy XIV team under the supervision of Kazushige Nojima and art direction by Tetsuya Nomura. The collaboration between teams was described as “complete.”
No detailed raid content was revealed yet, but it was suggested that characters from the Final Fantasy VII universe may appear.
FFVII Remake-themed Gold Saucer update: patch 7.56 adds “Frappe Fatale”
Patch 7.56 is set to introduce additional Final Fantasy VII Remake-themed content for the Gold Saucer ahead of Evercold. It will add a new area featuring FFVII Remake-inspired motifs and introduces a keyboard typing mini-game called Frappe Fatale.
Frappe Fatale will support up to four participants at a time. Patch 7.56 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The first episode of the mini-game will use the FFVII theme, including environments, enemies, and even the words to type taken from the game’s universe. Yoshida said the collaboration has been fruitful and the team wants to expand with a follow-up using different themes. The system will also allow alternative modes such as quizzes, suggesting additional keyboard-focused content later.
Rewards for the first episode will include costumes for Barret and Tifa, and Barret’s right-hand pistol is expected to be added as a fashion accessory.
Nintendo Switch 2 release date confirmed: August 4, 2026
Final Fantasy XIV is also confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2. The game launches on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with preorders expected to open shortly on the Nintendo eShop.
To help with launch stability, a roughly one-month free subscription period is planned on Nintendo Switch 2. Starter Edition, Complete Edition, and the free trial are all mentioned as options, with the team positioning the move as making the game more accessible.
However, the keynote also addressed subscription differences: Switch 2 will require an additional specific subscription formula on top of the base Square Enix subscription. The team acknowledged community frustration since PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox rely on a single subscription.
Square Enix’s commercial response includes a 50% discount for players who already subscribe on another platform for the Switch 2 subscription, while maintaining the same account and character via shared progression. It was also confirmed that no Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to play.
Collector’s edition for Evercold includes physical items and in-game bonuses
The Evercold Collector’s Edition artwork was unveiled, illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano.
The physical collector package includes a special Evercold box, a high-quality reaper figurine, an Ethos keychain, a Köttr plush, and a tapestry of the Fourth Reflection. It also includes three in-game items matching the digital Collector’s Edition: an Odin’s cor for Valhalla, the emote “Prier le Cristal,” and a crystal Magiboucliers for Bastion.
More details about preorders and availability will be announced later.
Everwcold is still targeted for January 2027.
