In this instance, a player used Google’s Gemini to probe information about an upcoming game from a one-person studio—and the model went beyond public facts, pointing to specific items tied to updates the developer had not announced.
The developer, Klub Kofta, said the story started when a player contacted them after asking Gemini questions about their game, Operation Octo. The AI responded with answers that matched what was already available publicly, but it also included concrete information about upcoming updates that the creator had not shared openly. One update, in particular, was said to add a character called Vantage Tripod.
What makes the situation notable is the suspected source of that detail. The developer stated that references to Vantage Tripod were mentioned only in project documentation stored in Google Docs. The implication is that Gemini pulled the information from that workspace, rather than from any developer-facing announcement or public changelog.
There’s a key caveat: this isn’t framed as “magic” model access. Players discussing the incident suggest that Google can process files and user data to help train or improve its AI models. In the case of Operation Octo, the player reportedly received an answer about a specific future update item that appears to have originated from the project docs the developer used.
The report also highlights that while Google Docs data is generally not expected to be used for AI training, those expectations can change when certain AI features are enabled. It’s suggested that some Google services may have these capabilities turned on by default, and that users may need to manually disable them—an example given is Gmail, where the feature is described as typically enabled unless a user turns it off.
For developers and players alike, the broader takeaway is about uncertainty and privacy: if an AI model is allowed to access data through connected features, it’s difficult to know what information is being read, processed, or potentially incorporated into the model’s outputs. The same concern has been raised in other contexts as well—there have been incidents in the United States where law firms used AI but did not properly secure the data, later allowing third parties to obtain confidential client information from the models.
Operation Octo is available on Steam, but the incident has shifted the focus from the game itself to the risks of using AI chat tools around anything that hasn’t been officially revealed.
