Reddit Modder’s SteamBoy Packs a Steam Deck Motherboard into a Game Boy Case
A Reddit modder is shrinking Valve’s handheld down to something that looks like it belongs in a retro pocket: the SteamBoy packs the original Steam Deck motherboard into a Game Boy–sized case. The project, created by user PhyFawkes, is still in progress, with the biggest remaining hurdle being how to make a VR-grade AMOLED display work with the Steam Deck’s hardware.

What makes the SteamBoy unusual isn’t just the tiny shell—it aims to keep the Steam Deck’s core parts largely intact. PhyFawkes says the motherboard and controller boards weren’t altered. Instead, the components are arranged as compactly as possible inside the limited space, including the use of longer flat ribbon cables where needed to connect everything.
Display is the main open problem
The mod’s most unresolved task is the display integration. The project uses a 1200 × 1080 pixel AMOLED panel that originally came from VR applications, running at 90 Hz. To get that panel to work with the Steam Deck motherboard, PhyFawkes says an additional adapter board is required between the Steam Deck’s flat ribbon cable and the display. There’s also an expectation that the BIOS will need corresponding changes.
Cooling approach and in-game temperature targets
Cooling is handled with a small 30 × 7 mm fan paired with a heatsink and a 3D-printed mount. The modder reports that after adjusting undervolting settings by -50 mV for both the CPU and GPU, testing in supported games reached temperatures in the expected range for a compact build.
For performance checks, PhyFawkes cites results from two titles: Tunic ran in the low-to-mid 70°C range, while Clair Obscur was reported closer to the 80°C mark.
What to watch next
The SteamBoy doesn’t yet have a complete “it boots with everything” milestone in the information available. The key unknown is whether the adapter board and BIOS adjustments required for the 1200 × 1080 90 Hz AMOLED will come together cleanly—because the rest of the hardware is already being fit into the case without major motherboard or controller changes.
