8BitDo FlipPad Is a Foldable USB-C Controller for Phone Handheld Gaming
8BitDo has launched the FlipPad, a foldable game controller designed to turn a smartphone into something closer to a handheld console—without pairing over Bluetooth or charging the controller separately.
8BitDo FlipPad: what it does
The FlipPad connects directly to a phone’s USB-C port. That means setup is basically plug-and-play: no Bluetooth pairing, and no controller battery to manage before you head out.
Once connected, it offers classic-style controls: a D-pad plus ABXY-style face buttons. The idea is to replace touch-only inputs with physical buttons for better precision, especially for players coming from retro handhelds.
8BitDo positions the controller for vertical (portrait) play, making it a strong fit for retro, arcade-style titles and other games that work well with a traditional controller layout. Because the FlipPad runs through USB-C, it’s also intended to avoid draining the controller mid-session.
Design details and durability claims
- Foldable form: it folds up when not in use to save space for pocket or bag carry.
- Call-friendly: while gaming, the controller can be folded so the phone can be used normally if a call comes in.
- Shared use: the same controller can be used across different phones, rather than being tied to one model.
- Case compatibility: 8BitDo says the FlipPad is designed to work with most phone cases, so you typically won’t need to remove the cover to play.
The company also lists durability targets for key components: the frame/bearing area is claimed to handle over 6,000 openings, and the USB-C connection is rated for more than 10,000 plug-in connections.

The FlipPad is available to buy in Europe for 29.99 euros.
