Steam Free Weekend: Try WWI Shooter and Mech Tactics for Free
This weekend, Steam is offering two games for free, letting players try very different battlefields—from World War I combat to mech-led tactical warfare. The promotion also runs alongside discounts of up to 50% on the full versions, giving you a reason to sample first and buy later if you like what you play.
Two free trials on Steam this weekend
Steam’s current giveaway period includes free access to two titles, both available to try for a limited time. Together, the offer is positioned as a chance to test games worth roughly 55 euros without commitment.
Over The Top: WWI — World War I shooter trial
The free trial for Over The Top: WWI drops you into World War I battles where you can fight as one of several factions. Players can choose to play on the side of the British, Germans, Americans, or French, and the game includes eight different classes. The arsenal isn’t limited to infantry equipment either—players can also man aircraft and tanks.
Steam notes the multiplayer battles can include up to 200 players. The game also sits at 88% positive reviews on Steam, based on the figures shown in the promotion details.
Front Mission 3: Remake — mech-based tactics RPG trial
The second free option is Front Mission 3: Remake from MegaPixel Studios. Instead of human soldiers, the battlefield is filled with heavily armored combat machines referred to as Wanzers. Combat is turn-based, and the promotion emphasizes that acting too quickly can cause missions to fail.
It also features a branching story with different narratives, and the promotion lists 75% of players as liking the mix. As with the shooter, you can play the trial free of charge during the event window.
How long the free trials last
The free access for both games is available until 24 August 2026 at 19:00 (German time). After that deadline, you’ll need to purchase the games again if you want to continue playing.
Alongside the trials, Steam is running discounts on the full versions. The promotion lists reductions of up to 50%, but those savings are only relevant while the sale is active—so it’s best not to wait until the end of the window.
