Terranigma is headed back to modern players: Clear River Games has officially announced that the SNES action RPG will return in early 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2—with new in-game visuals and newly arranged music, alongside other promised upgrades and bonus content.

SNES classic finally coming to modern platforms

Originally released for SNES in Japan in 1995 and then in Europe in late 1996, Terranigma never received a North American release at the time. Even after that, it remained stuck on its original platform—until now. The upcoming release marks the first return to contemporary systems in nearly three decades.

Clear River Games confirms the project after earlier hints

What began as a pointed tease last week has now been confirmed: Clear River Games is bringing back the action RPG developed by Quintet. The announcement came during the Pixel Arcadia Showcase, following earlier signals that the game was returning.

New visuals, refreshed soundtrack arrangements, and more

Clear River Games is positioning this as more than a straightforward re-release. The publisher says the remake will include multiple improvements, adjustments, and bonus content.

Designer Kamui Fujiwara—who worked on the original’s character and world design—will contribute new in-game graphics and new key art. He is also listed as providing advisory support during production. On top of that, parts of the original soundtrack are expected to be rearranged for the new version.

More specifics about the full list of changes haven’t been shared yet.

What the early screenshots suggest about the presentation

Early screenshots also show how the new version handles the original game’s 4:3 look on today’s 16:9 displays. Rather than stretching the classic visuals, the game appears to frame the original artwork with additional imagery. A separate on-screen display on the right includes information such as current experience points and the value required for the next level.

However, not every visual element seen in the previews is new. Large “hands” shown surrounding Ark in one screenshot are not described as part of the new additions—they were already present in the SNES original as part of the Bone Pin animation used to teleport Kumari Ark.

No exact date yet

Clear River Games has only provided a timeframe: early 2027. A specific release day has not been announced.
