Ubisoft Defends Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake at gamescom 2026 Panel
Ubisoft is using gamescom 2026 to defend its upcoming Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake, laying out why the project exists at all—and what it plans to keep faithful from the original while modernizing the experience for new players.
Three pillars for the Heroes 3 remake
At a panel during gamescom 2026, the team behind the remake said the production is guided by three core principles. The creative director, Jean Felix Monin, positioned the remake as part of a broader effort to reconnect with long-time fans after the series had been inactive for a long time.
- Authenticity: the remake will stick to the original’s design spirit, while also addressing shortcomings in a way that respects the “duch oryginału” (the original’s spirit). The team did not confirm which specific balance or gameplay adjustments will ship at launch versus coming later. They also said new “heroes” will be added after release.
- Fresh look: the game will receive a full 3D presentation, with the team stating that 2D may feel too old-fashioned for today’s players.
- Community longevity: the remake’s launch support will include several known fan-made projects, with the goal of integrating more of them after debut.
Why Ubisoft says it’s not replacing the original
Ubisoft emphasized that the remake is being built with the community in mind. Monin said the franchise was “asleep” for a long time, which is why projects such as Olden Era and the Heroes 3 remake are now appearing as part of a strategy aimed at bringing back fans who may have drifted away from the fantasy world.
The company also stressed that the remake is not intended to supplant the classic. Ubisoft said, in effect, that the project is a commitment to the series’ future and that Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is not meant to replace the original game.
To underline that collaboration, Ubisoft pointed to a major fan-made expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic 3: Horn of the Abyss. The expansion was released on Steam the same day the original Heroes 3 (“the third game”) was also made available on Valve’s platform. Ubisoft says Horn of the Abyss will be included in the remake on launch day, and that The Mysterious Island scenario will be included as well.
What to watch next
While the team says it plans to bring as much fan-created content as possible into the remake, it hasn’t detailed how the remake’s changes will land in practice—especially regarding which gameplay and balance fixes will be present at launch. The team’s next confirmations to look for are the exact nature and timing of the added heroes and which additional community projects will be integrated after the remake debuts.
