Pokemon FireEmerald ROM Hack Combines Kanto and Hoenn in Gen 3
A new fan-made ROM hack is giving Pokémon trainers a reason to revisit Gen 3 while they wait for more details on what comes next from the official franchise. On July 19, a Pokémon fan developer named ManicPacer released Pokemon FireEmerald, a project that folds the Hoenn and Kanto regions into a single Gen 3-style adventure built around the Pokémon Emerald ROM.
Pokemon FireEmerald is designed as one combined journey, but it isn’t fully open-world. Players can explore Kanto freely, and access to Hoenn only unlocks after they become the Kanto Pokémon League Champion. The hack also brings in the Sevii Islands from FireRed and LeafGreen, allowing that portion to be visited at the player’s leisure.
In addition to the region crossover, the project adds quality-of-life changes inspired by the PokeEmerald Expansion effort. That includes optional day-and-night cycles, along with updated Pokémon battle mechanics and types. It also targets a more complete dex experience by avoiding missing version-exclusive Pokémon, and it incorporates event tickets directly into the setting rather than relying on duplicate key items that players might already have from the other region. ManicPacer notes that one ticket is tied to the main story in a way that can’t be missed, while the rest are optional and can be missed depending on what players do.
The hack further includes story and system adjustments: Mega Stones and Linking Cords become available at a specific shop after reaching a certain point in the game. Cerulean Cave is accessible immediately after the player becomes the Kanto Champion, removing the need to complete the Sevii Islands quest first. If Mewtwo is encountered before Hoenn, it will be level 60 (instead of 70), and if encountered after Hoenn, it rises to level 100. Booting the game will also reflect the player’s last save—starting on either the FireRed or Emerald intro and title screens depending on which region was last visited.
ManicPacer says the project is built on a solo effort and is currently incomplete, so players should expect bugs. There’s also a major progression caveat for anyone planning a full run: once trainers become Kanto Champion and travel to Hoenn, they won’t be able to return to Kanto until Hoenn’s main story is finished. Leveling is another important consideration, since Pokémon in Hoenn are boosted significantly, meaning players will need to prepare before making the jump.
Looking beyond the current build, ManicPacer has planned additional updates including user interface customization, more advanced difficulty settings, and a built-in Nuzlocke challenge mode. Because Nuzlocke rules are a popular challenge format among Pokémon fans, it remains to be seen how many players will opt into the mode once it’s available.
To help improve the hack, ManicPacer encouraged players to report bugs and share feedback—especially around difficulty—while the team continues development. With Pokemon Winds and Waves still awaiting new information, the hope is that Pokemon FireEmerald will keep trainers busy with a nostalgic, tropical-leaning Gen 3 crossover experience.
Separately, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen reportedly received an update that may finally lead to Pokémon Home support becoming available soon.
