Magic: The Gathering’s next crossover with The Hobbit is bringing a new equipment-focused mechanic called Hone, shown on Sting, Bilbo’s Sword. More importantly for players, the mechanic is not expected to be limited to the crossover set—its future is already on the design team’s roadmap.

What Hone does in The Hobbit crossover

Hone appears on the card Sting, Bilbo’s Sword, a colorless Equipment that costs 2 mana and has Flash. When Sting enters the battlefield, it places a hone counter on itself for each creature target opponent controls. After that, Sting can be attached to up to one creature you control.

Hone counters improve the equipped creature: each hone counter on Sting grants the equipped creature +1/+0.

Why Wizards added it—and how it fits red

During a MagicCon panel in Amsterdam, lead game designer Gavin Verhey discussed how Hone was developed and why the team chose to explore it.

He said the design group runs internal “mechanical hackathons” to generate new ideas and solve gameplay problems for specific color identities. One issue the team highlighted was that red decks often struggle to scale as games go long, relying on winning quickly before control strategies fully establish themselves.

Hone was one approach to help red leverage equipment. Verhey explained that the mechanic could let equipment “hone up” over time, strengthening them in a way he described as “very red,” and that the team will evaluate how the mechanic plays and how players respond before deciding how far to take it in future designs.

Hone is planned for future sets

Although Hone debuts in The Hobbit, Verhey indicated it is intended to appear beyond the crossover. He described Hone as something the team is planning for inclusion in future sets, depending on reception and play patterns.

He also acknowledged a potential challenge that comes with any counter-based mechanic: visual clarity. The expectation is that the mechanic should be manageable unless Hone becomes widespread across many cards and formats.

Release timing and other MagicCon reveals

  1. The Hobbit is scheduled to release on August 14.
  2. MagicCon Amsterdam also previewed the three in-universe sets planned for release next year, which were described as having been well received by players.

With The Hobbit preview season underway and Hone already tied to a specific equipment card, players will soon get a chance to test whether this new counter mechanic meaningfully improves red’s long-game pressure—or whether it stays a crossover-specific experiment.
