Blizzard isn’t ready to announce anything new, but World of Warcraft game director Ion Hazzikostas has confirmed the team is actively discussing potential updates to secondary professions—explicitly including archaeology—as part of work tied to Last Titan.

Archaeology hasn’t evolved much since Shadowlands

Archaeology remains available for players who want to complete existing content, but it hasn’t seen meaningful expansion recently. The profession was largely left untouched after the Shadowlands expansion, with the last archaeology content releases effectively stalling years earlier during the Battle for Azeroth era.

“Overdue” secondary professions, with Last Titan on the horizon

During a Q&A on the official WoW Portal Room Discord server, Hazzikostas said that several secondary professions are “overdue for a closer look.” He added that there’s nothing to announce immediately, but the developers are “definitely discussing some potential improvements” as they relate to Last Titan.

Why archaeology slowed down—and what Blizzard wants to change

When asked about archaeology in particular, Hazzikostas said he believes the core fantasy is strong. In his view, archaeology’s appeal comes from the kinds of items players can obtain and from uncovering lore “tidbits” revealed through the profession.

At the same time, he explained that stepping back from the profession was driven by data and player feedback, alongside the team’s own experience—specifically, a lack of excitement around the “moment to moment gameplay” of archaeology.

Still, he offered a clear direction for what could make it better: Blizzard would “love to look at ways of delivering” the fantasy of researching and uncovering relics in a way that feels more engaging during actual gameplay, rather than only as a concept.
