Mine a Mountain Adds Rune System With Boulders Update: How to Get and Use
With the Boulders Update in Mine a Mountain, the game added a Rune system built around deep-mountain mining. As of this update, there are ten Runes available—Luck, Haste, Storm, Weight, Fortune, Detonation, Preservation, Warmth, Excavator, and Colossus—and you activate their effects by placing the Runes in your plot.
Runes aren’t crafted or purchased; they come from boulders. You find boulders by mining deeper into the mountain, then break them using the correct pickaxe. When you mine a boulder, it will drop rare crystals and may also drop a Rune, giving you a chance to collect any of the available effects as you push further.
The type of boulder matters for what you can obtain. Higher-rarity boulders can drop Runes from lower-rarity boulder pools, meaning a higher-tier boulder such as a Nocturnite Boulder has a chance to drop any of the ten Runes currently in the system. In other words, progressing to rarer boulders improves your odds of pulling the specific Rune effects you want for your plot.
Once you’ve obtained Runes, their role is to apply status effects for a limited duration when placed in your plot. The system is centered on timed buffs: you slot Runes to trigger the corresponding effects, then manage your setup as those effects expire.
Duplicate Runes can be useful for stronger or longer benefits. When you obtain duplicates, you can merge them to increase their size and extend the duration of their status effect—except for Luck. Luck can’t be merged to scale up in size. Instead, additional Luck Runes stack multiplicatively: placing four Luck Runes on your plot results in a +600% Luck increase.
If you’re trying to mine boulders efficiently and chase the best Rune drops, you’ll want the Terminus Pickaxe to handle all boulder types. And if you’re exploring other progression systems alongside Rune builds, the game also features Mutations and Weather Events that can shape how you play.
