The Elder Scrolls Online Launches Season One: Thieves Guild Returns July 8
The Elder Scrolls Online’s next seasonal content drop is live: Season One, titled “Return of the Thieves Guild,” runs from July 8 through October 21, 2026. It brings back the Thieves Guild, introduces Shéogorath’s holiday chaos, and adds a new nautical PvE event—while keeping all gameplay updates free for everyone, with optional premium rewards tied to the Tamriel Tome.
Season One dates and what’s free for everyone
Season One is available on PC, Mac, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The season’s core gameplay content, features, and improvements are free to all players. The only paid element is the premium version of the Tamriel Tome, which offers additional cosmetic and progression rewards.
There’s also a rollout in phases, so not every feature arrives on day one.

New story content: Thieves Guild returns, Shéogorath enters
The season begins by expanding the Thieves Guild with a new story line and associated gameplay systems. Players also get access to the season’s first batch of Thieves Guild activities, including daily quests and unique rewards.
On July 29, the focus shifts to Shéogorath as “Noth the Unhinged” returns with a new Daedric-themed story. The season positions Shéogorath’s appearance as a late-July headline, with additional details promised as the month unfolds.
Favors system and dynamic encounters
Alongside the Thieves Guild story, the Favors system is live from July 8. The system places notice boards around Tamriel’s alliance zones, where players can interact to receive daily quests connected to a larger narrative.
The season also introduces dynamic encounters, described as multi-step events designed for groups of nearby players. Three encounters are available at launch (July 8), spanning locations including Glenumbra, Auridia, and the Reach (Ebsoulis/“Éboulis”). New encounters are expected to appear in later seasons.
Update 51 (September 21): Wayrest Crypt, Crimson Veldt trial, Rumors
Update 51 on September 21 is the delivery date for multiple major additions.
- Wayrest Crypt: a solo-oriented experience featuring an evolving layout and puzzle-heavy rooms, with rewards for players who take on its maze-like structure.
- Crimson Veldt trial (12-player PvE): a group challenge aimed at clearing enemies and bosses before facing werewolf hunters known as the First Hounds (“Premiers Mordus”).
- Rumors system: a new exploration approach built around finding non-linear clues scattered through the world and assembling them into a story when combined.
New PvE trial detail: mounted fights
The Crimson Veldt trial also includes a milestone for ESO: players will be able to take part in fights using mounts for the first time in the game’s history, as part of the September 21 release with Update 51.
Experience improvements and interface tools
Also arriving with Update 51 on September 21 are multiple quality-of-life improvements for gameplay experience. The notes specifically mention the conclusion of an “hybridization initiative,” the first version of an interface customization tool available on PC only, and the ability to pin achievements.
“High Seas of Tamriel” PvE event (Sept 30 – Oct 14)
From September 30 to October 14, the season adds the “High Seas of Tamriel” event. Players sail the Abecean Sea, fight pirates in large naval battles, explore deep ocean areas, and search for sunken treasures.
Extra ongoing content: PvP carnage and Golden pursuit campaigns
Beyond the headline seasonal systems, Season One also includes a new edition of the PvP event “Whitespire Slasher” (“Carnage de Blancserpent”) and several campaigns tied to the Golden Pursuits (“poursuites dorées”). More information is promised later.
New Tamriel Tome and refreshed Crown Store selection
Season One comes with a new Tamriel Tome and a renewed selection in the Crown Store’s Gold Coast Bazaar.
Tamriel Tome (free and premium)
The Tamriel Tome is available in both free and premium versions. The premium offering includes additional rewards beyond the free track. The free version includes large quantities of Seals, Trade Gold, and Crown Crates, along with collectible items such as the “Golden Dwemer Spider” familiar and the “Charismatic Rogue” weapon style.
The premium version adds items including the “Hyena of the End of Axes” mount, the “Charismatic Rogue” armor style, and “Cambio Zammes,” described as an exiled rooster assistant. A premium+ bonus is also mentioned, adding two Tome Point caches and a “Golden Dawn Corgi” familiar.
Progression follows the standard Tome structure: players complete Tome challenges to earn points, unlock pages, and spend points on rewards from those pages.
Gold Coast Bazaar refresh: over 30 rotating items
Alongside permanent items, the season brings a rotating set of more than thirty Crown Store additions available only during Season One. Among the highlighted returns are the “Treasure Hunter’s Horse” mount and the “Statue, Ascendant Lord” furniture piece, last seen in 2024 and 2022 respectively.
Studio transition note
The announcement also includes a staffing and direction update: the studio has reduced headcount significantly due to a difficult period, and it has announced a change in direction. The current leadership will remain in place for a transition period to ensure a smooth handoff.
