The Testaments Season 2 Begins Filming as Hulu-Disney+ Returns to Gilead
The sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale is gearing up to return to Gilead. The Testaments, the Hulu-Disney+ series that began airing in 2026 after its first season, has been renewed for a second season and is set to bring the story back to the theocratic regime years after the original show’s ending.
The Testaments premiered last April and adapts Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, picking up years after the events that closed out The Handmaid’s Tale. While the original series had already hinted at the collapse of the regime, Gilead still proves difficult to topple—setting the stage for a new phase of struggle where teenage characters are positioned to help reshape what comes next.
Fifteen years after the fall of the old order, June Osborne’s daughter, Hannah, is known in Gilead as Agness and faces a grim future under the law: she is a “quince” preparing to be paired for life. But her path shifts when Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) assigns her to Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a young “pearl” who appears to have gone astray while, in reality, is inside Gilead for secret purposes.
Production begins on season two
Chase Infinity shared a video on TikTok celebrating the start of production for the second season, joined by Lucy Halliday, Rowan Blanchard (Shunammite), and Mattea Conforti (Becka Grove). Season one ended in a traumatic way for Becka, who struggles privately with her feelings, ultimately loses her battle, and commits a crime that nearly costs her her life—leaving lasting consequences.
The first season also closed with major revelations that clarify who each character is, reshaping expectations for what follows. Even with those answers on the table, the show continues to emphasize Gilead’s ability to reverse momentum through intimidation, manipulation, and brutal methods when necessary.
Creator Bruce Miller has suggested there is room for three or four seasons to complete the overall story. Filming for season two points toward a possible return in summer or autumn 2027.
For now, viewers can watch The Testaments season one, along with all six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, available on Disney+.
