Vampire Survivors Weapon Evolution Rules Explained for Base Game and DLC

In Vampire Survivors, surviving the enemy waves often comes down to evolving your weapons—and the process follows a few consistent rules across the base game and paid expansions. Most weapon evolutions require you to max out the weapon, pair it with a specific passive item, and then open a chest dropped by an elite enemy, which can start appearing from the 10-minute mark of a run.

How weapon evolution works

For most weapons, the path to an evolution looks like this:

  1. Bring the weapon to its maximum level.
  2. Equip the correct passive item tied to that weapon’s evolution.
  3. Wait for an elite enemy to drop an evolution chest.
  4. Open the chest to obtain the evolved result.

These chests typically begin offering evolutions from minute 10 of the match.

Weapon evolution by game mode and DLC

Base game

The base game includes the series’ classic evolutions, and it has also added new weapons and combinations through free updates. Among the special evolutions added are Crimson Shroud, Infinite Corridor, Vandalier, and Fuwalafuwaloo.

Legacy of the Moonspell

Legacy of the Moonspell was the first major paid expansion for Vampire Survivors. Its weapons feature six main evolution setups, and the expansion’s combinations emphasize maximizing both the weapon and the required item before attempting the evolution.

Tides of the Foscari

Tides of the Foscari adds multiple weapons with different evolution approaches. In addition to standard style combinations, it includes SpellStrom, a three-weapon union.

Emergency Meeting

The Emergency Meeting DLC—based on Among Us—uses a distinct mechanic: its weapons combine with different Mini Crewmates. Which passive item you need depends on the character or role that Mini Crewmate is associated with.

Operation Guns

Operation Guns, the crossover with Contra, uses a more specific evolution system across its upgrades. All of its evolutions rely on the Weapon Power-Up, and in some combinations a traditional passive item is added on top of it.

Ode to Castlevania

Ode to Castlevania is the expansion that adds the most evolutions. It introduces dozens of weapons inspired by Konami’s Castlevania series, and many of them include their own dedicated evolution paths.

Esmerald Diorama

Esmerald Diorama takes a noticeably different direction from earlier DLC. Several of its weapons use three-stage evolution chains, while others require both a passive item and a Tech-type upgrade.

Ante Chamber

Ante Chamber is free content based on Balatro, adding four new weapons and their respective evolutions. These weapons incorporate the Outer Saboteur as part of their evolution system.
