Mortal Shell 2 ESRB Rating Before August 20 Launch

Mortal Shell 2, the upcoming Soulslike from Cold Symmetry, has received its official ESRB rating ahead of its launch next month. The game is due to release on August 20 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and the ESRB’s detailed description signals a markedly mature, gory action experience.

PlayStack is publishing the sequel, which was announced during Summer Game Fest 2025. The rating assigns the game an M mark for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Suggestive Themes. The ESRB content summary lays out a third-person action role-playing adventure in which players take the role of the Harbinger, traveling across a fantasy world to hunt “mystical eggs.” Combat is centered on melee-style fighting using swords, axes, and firearms, with realistic gunfire effects and prominent blood-splatter visuals.

According to the ESRB listing, some attacks can lead to dismemberment and/or decapitation, while other strikes can cause enemies to explode into large sprays of blood. The rating summary also references a harpy creature with exposed breasts and a bloated corpse that appears nude. It further notes that the word “f**k” is heard in-game, alongside the mature content tags tied to violence and suggestive material.

That context suggests Mortal Shell 2 will lean harder into mature presentation than the original Mortal Shell. The first game also carried an M rating, but its ESRB coverage did not include the “Suggestive Themes” or “Strong Language” tags, and its violence description did not use the “Intense” keyword that appears for the sequel.

Players who want to sample Mortal Shell 2’s early gameplay can do so right now through an Open Beta on Steam. The beta provides free access to the prologue plus a look at the early open world, for a total of about three hours. During the trial, players can test multiple Shells—outfits that grant special abilities and traits—explore a set of dungeons, and fight “one truly formidable foe.”

On the physical side, PlayStack also confirmed that PS5-exclusive Revered Editions have already sold out shortly after the game’s release date and price were revealed. The Revered Edition includes a steelbook case, a collector’s box, fine art prints, and an artbook, along with the Obsidian and Skeletal Harbinger skins for players who pre-order.

With an August 20 release date, Mortal Shell 2 is arriving before September’s heavier release period. Still, it won’t be competing in a quiet window: early August includes Beast of Reincarnation and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and several notable titles land about a week after the Mortal Shell 2 launch, including Star Wars Zero Company, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.
