Arsenal have ruled out a major Emirates Stadium expansion, choosing instead to upgrade the existing 60,704-capacity ground through smaller projects aimed at improving the matchday experience and commercial facilities.

The club set up a stadium review group in 2024, chaired by chief executive Richard Garlick, to examine whether substantial extra seating could be added. That work has now concluded that a large rebuild is not the priority, despite record demand for tickets in north London.

Supporters were told at a recent meeting that Arsenal favour the Emirates’ “continued evolution” rather than a sweeping redevelopment plan. The focus will be on hospitality, retail, catering and visitor areas, alongside changes intended to improve the atmosphere inside the stadium.

Safe standing is central to that approach. It has been installed at the Clock End during the current season and is scheduled to be introduced in the North Bank next season. Arsenal have also pointed to work already carried out with catering partner Legends as part of the ongoing modernisation programme.

A significant increase in capacity would have required difficult and expensive structural work, including potential alterations to the roof and upper tiers. Arsenal have opted against that disruption, judging targeted investment in the present stadium to offer a stronger return.

The decision leaves the Emirates as England’s seventh-largest football stadium. Wembley remains the largest at 90,000, followed by Old Trafford’s 74,158. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium holds 62,850, with West Ham’s London Stadium at 62,500, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium at 61,470 and Liverpool’s expanded Anfield at 61,276.

Tottenham moved above Arsenal on capacity when their 62,850-seat venue opened in 2019. Spurs’ stadium was also built to host major non-football events, including NFL fixtures and concerts, while Arsenal’s immediate plan is to improve the Emirates rather than transform it.
