Baldur’s Gate 3 Hits Year Three: Larian Shares Modding and NPC Death Stats
Baldur’s Gate 3 turns three this week, and Larian is marking the milestone with a fresh batch of unusual player-statistics and success metrics—ranging from modding numbers to the NPC deaths most often seen during campaigns.
Announcement: third birthday numbers and player habits
Larian says the game’s mod support has been a major driver since it launched, and the studio is continuing the birthday tradition of spotlighting quirky community data. Earlier years focused on things like player completion rates and popular classes, then origin characters and “loving bears,” and later on mods themselves—this year’s batch keeps that focus, but expands it with more combat and “money run” stats.
What changed (this update’s new data)
- Mods released: about 13,000 total modifications
- Mod downloads across platforms: 500 million
- Most frequent deaths among story NPCs: Zevlor (12+ million), Rolan (8.6+ million), Barcus Wroot (2.6+ million)
- Barcus Wroot’s “accidental” death: 2.1 million times launched by the windmill
- Combat usage: Blood of Lathander used in 670,474,592 fights
Practical impact: what the stats say about players’ runs
The headline modding figures put a concrete number behind community creativity: Larian reports roughly 13,000 mods published and 500 million downloads across its supported platforms. In the story side of the data, Zevlor tops the list for how often players see him die, followed by Rolan and then Barcus Wroot. Larian also breaks down Wroot’s fate, with 2.1 million of his deaths coming from being “accidentally” blasted by the windmill where he’s bound.
On the “Dark Urge” side, Larian highlights a counterintuitive pattern: Alfira the bard dies more often in runs where players do not choose the Dark Urge character than in runs that do.
Combat behavior includes some surprising item usage. Larian says the legendary morningstar Blood of Lathander was used in fights 670,474,592 times. It also notes that players have gotten creative with less conventional tools: the “Nutcracker” (a stone with the name carved into it) was reportedly used in two fights in the Githyanki Creche, and the dagger named “Poo-Scraper” (Kotkratzer) was used in four fights during Act 3.
Finally, the studio shares economy and pacing data. Fewer than 1% of players manage to earn 180,000 gold in a single playthrough. In the same span, 114 users played the game in a 1:1 aspect ratio, while more than 9,000 players used a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio.
Platform scope and what’s next
Larian’s figures for mod publishing and downloads are presented as platform-wide totals across its mod ecosystem. For players, the immediate takeaway is straightforward: the mod scene is still expanding rapidly, and the most common NPC casualties and item choices point to exactly what many groups are optimizing for—story outcomes, combat efficiency, and occasionally, chaotic experimentation.
With the third-year celebration, Larian is also continuing its tradition of using birthdays to summarize community behavior, so expect more statistic-style updates as the milestone content cycle continues.
