Bastoni earns Italy Nations League draw against France in Paris
Alessandro Bastoni struck again for Italy as the Azzurri held France to a 1-1 UEFA Nations League draw in Paris, cancelling out Michael Olise’s opening goal at the Stade de France. The Inter defender has now scored in each of Italy’s last two Nations League matches, following his goal in the 4-1 win over Turkiye.
The 25-year-old’s equaliser marked a significant return after a prolonged international absence that followed his red card in the World Cup play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also leaves Bastoni as Italy’s leading scorer during Roberto Mancini’s second spell in charge.
France had been preparing for a celebratory evening in Paris, but Italy produced a disciplined, resilient display and pushed for a winner after Dayot Upamecano was dismissed late on. France’s wait for a clean sheet against Italy also continues, having last shut out the Azzurri in September 2007.
Bastoni said the immediate priority after scoring was to ensure Italy did not give the lead away again. He praised the group for standing up to elite opposition, insisting the visitors had arrived convinced they could disrupt France’s plans.
“It was difficult and we expected that, but the team performance made me very happy,” Bastoni said. “We battled, we suffered and spoiled some of what France wanted from the night. Scoring is nice, but my first thought afterwards was that we could not concede again.”
The centre-back also addressed the difficult period surrounding his dismissal and speculation over a possible Serie A exit. Bastoni said he retained faith in himself despite the setbacks, pointing to a senior career of more than 300 appearances and thanking his family for their support.
“I did not think I would score twice, but I never stopped believing in myself,” he added. “One or two moments cannot undo a career that has already gone beyond 300 matches.”
Italy now move on to their final Nations League fixture of the international window. Bastoni believes the performance in Paris has given Mancini’s squad proof that they can challenge any opponent, but warned that nothing can be taken for granted in the next match.
