Bonnie Studios’ Manny Ports Native Half-Life to PS1, Asks Valve for Approval
A developer has pulled off a truly unusual technical feat: a native, non-emulated build of Half-Life running on an original PlayStation 1 (SCPH-9002). The project, created by Manny from Bonnie Studios, is being shared as a rendered/game engine written from scratch in Rust, and the creator says he already contacted Valve to request approval before publishing anything.
Native Half-Life on PS1—no emulation, no demake
Manny’s debut video frames the work as neither a traditional emulator nor a simple “demake.” He describes it as a custom rendering and game engine created from the ground up in Rust, specifically demonstrated on a real PS1 unit model SCPH-9002.
In the clip, he shows 14 minutes of gameplay from a 1998-era Half-Life experience—running on Sony hardware despite the effort being built using newer tooling and techniques. The creator also credits the project’s pipeline as being aided “a bit” by AI-generated code, while still emphasizing the core work is a fresh engine rather than playback of an existing PS1 build.
Valve outreach and the “one-month” decision
A key part of the story is how the developer plans to handle legal and distribution concerns. Manny says he contacted Valve and asked them to “greenlight” the project before releasing the source.
He also sets a clear deadline: if he doesn’t hear back within roughly one month, he says he will interpret that as approval and make the work public. He adds that, for legal reasons, he will not provide a direct download or a ready-to-play version.
For players, that distinction matters. Manny’s approach requires an owner to use a legal copy of Half-Life on Steam. His conversion tool reads the game on a PC and then generates a disc workflow from there, with the console still required.

Performance on real hardware—and why it’s a notable technical milestone
On an actual PS1, Manny reports the project is not aiming for modern smoothness. He says the build sits at around 17 FPS, with 20 FPS most of the time and dips to roughly 10–16 FPS in more open areas. He also notes a latency difference caused by a capture chain—adding about 100 milliseconds between the on-screen image and the recorded output—so the experience on the console itself is described as more responsive than the video might suggest.
The timing makes the achievement stand out. The PS1 launched in 1995, while Half-Life arrived on PC in 1998. Half-Life later reached PlayStation hardware in 2001 on PS2, meaning a native PS1 run is a significant engineering hurdle even before considering the project’s “from scratch” engine approach.
Whether Valve approves the public release or not, the project’s core claim—running Half-Life on PS1 hardware via a custom Rust engine rather than emulation—marks a rare, historically grounded example of how far reverse engineering and engine recreation can go.
