Michael Carrick is expected to remain in the Manchester United dugout for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth at Old Trafford, despite growing alarm over the club’s form.

The 45-year-old is fighting to protect his position after Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League collapse at Como, a result that extended United’s winless run to seven matches. The team have managed only one league victory this season.

Carrick signed a two-year deal in May, but his longer-term prospects are now uncertain. United’s hierarchy are understood to accept that a rapid improvement is required or a managerial change will become unavoidable.

There is, however, recognition inside the club that Carrick is not solely responsible for the downturn. Concerns have been raised over players failing to accept enough personal accountability for their displays.

Como defeat intensifies scrutiny

Senior United figures were stunned by the level of the performance at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. Amad Diallo, sent on at half-time, was viewed as the only player to emerge with significant credit from the defeat.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was withdrawn in the 67th minute and appeared to question Carrick’s tactical approach and the work of his coaching staff after the final whistle. The club will review those comments before deciding whether disciplinary action is required.

It is the second occasion in as many weeks that a senior player has publicly targeted figures at the club. Lisandro Martínez criticised director of football Jason Wilcox and the board following the 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid. The defender later apologised publicly and was fined.

What happens next

United’s players return to training on Friday after being given Thursday off following their trip to Italy. Carrick will also face the media on Friday afternoon at his regular pre-match press conference.

Sunday’s visit of Marco Rose’s Bournemouth now carries added weight. Carrick is set to take charge, but another poor result would deepen the pressure around Old Trafford.
