Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Carrick Under Pressure After Ninth Winless Game
Manchester United’s pressure on Michael Carrick intensified after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea stretched their winless run to nine matches in all competitions. The loss at Stamford Bridge leaves United with seven points from nine league games and facing mounting concern over a relegation fight.
Second-half collapse decides Stamford Bridge contest
United matched Chelsea through a fast, open first half and created opportunities to move ahead, but their attacking waste proved costly. Matheus Cunha and Estêvão each had a goal ruled out for offside before the break.
Chelsea, who had arrived after two successive defeats, took control after half-time. Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock five minutes into the second period, driving through the United defence before lifting a composed finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Lisandro Martínez then turned a difficult situation into a damaging one. The Argentine received a second yellow card just three minutes and 30 seconds after his first, with VAR identifying contact from his elbow on Wesley Fofana during a Chelsea corner.
Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0. Lammens got both hands to the spot-kick, but could not stop the ball squeezing in off the post. Mike Penders protected Chelsea’s clean sheet late on by pushing Bryan Mbeumo’s fierce injury-time effort onto the crossbar.
Key moments
- United and Chelsea exchanged attacks in the opening half, with Cunha and Estêvão denied by offside calls.
- Rogers put Chelsea ahead five minutes after the restart following a direct run through the United back line.
- Martínez was dismissed after VAR reviewed his elbow on Fofana at a corner.
- Palmer’s penalty, despite Lammens making contact, doubled Chelsea’s lead.
- Penders denied Mbeumo in stoppage time to secure the result.
Carrick’s position under sharper scrutiny
Carrick had already been expected by many to lose his job after last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, but United’s hierarchy allowed him further time to reverse the slide. Saturday’s result has instead pushed the club closer to an unwanted historical marker.
United have gone 10 games without a victory on only two occasions in their history: in 1977-78 and 1961-62. Their next fixture is a Champions League meeting with Roma on Tuesday.
Bruno Fernandes returned to the starting side in west London after missing the Bournemouth defeat. The United captain had been left out following criticism of Carrick’s tactics after the heavy loss at Como days earlier.
Martínez also left without any contact with Carrick after his dismissal, heading straight down the tunnel. Earlier this month, following United’s 2-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid on October 13, he had publicly criticised the club hierarchy.
Chelsea’s young side finds its response
Chelsea fielded a starting XI with an average age of 23 years and 89 days. It was the youngest Premier League line-up since Manchester United’s team against Brentford in May 2025, whose average was 22 years and 270 days.
For Chelsea, it equalled their joint-second youngest Premier League starting side. They also recorded an average of 23 years and 89 days against Newcastle in October 2024, while the youngest remains the 23 years and 21 days line-up used against Crystal Palace in December 2023.
- United remain without a win in nine games across all competitions.
- Seven points from nine league matches have left Carrick’s side in serious trouble.
- Martínez will now be unavailable after his red card, adding to the problems before Roma.
- Chelsea recovered from consecutive losses with a controlled second-half display.
