The study, published in the Journal of Human Evolution, places the manufacture of Lingjing’s stone-tool industry at about 146,000 years ago—roughly 20,000 years earlier than prior estimates. That timing puts toolmakers squarely in a particularly rigorous glacial period.

Researchers describe the artifacts as worked stone disks, created with a sophisticated approach to how rock behaves in three dimensions. They say the makers understood rock structure well enough to anticipate fracture points and produce sharp flakes with a precision measured at the millimeter scale.

Lead archaeologist Yuchao Zhao (Field Museum, Chicago) argues that the findings challenge a common assumption that creativity and technical development mainly flourish during favorable conditions. In his words, discovering that the tools were made during an ice age changes the story: difficult times can force adaptation.

How the age was rechecked

To reassess the age of the deposit, the team used uranium-thorium dating on calcite crystals found within a fossilized animal rib. The natural “clock” provided by those crystals led to a revised chronology, indicating that the inhabitants of Lingjing were using a centripetal stone-working approach earlier than what had been associated with a later warming period.

Zhao also frames the result as a broader shift in interpretation: even if the tools are only modestly older than expected, the overall narrative about technological timing changes substantially.

Who made the tools: Homo juluensis and the Denisovan connection

The researchers attribute the technology to Homo juluensis, an archaic group of hominins that is linked in the discussion to the Denisovans. They also point to recent protein analyses carried out on fossils discovered near Taiwan, which they say support both the presence and biological complexity of these populations in the region.

In terms of technological reasoning, the study highlights meaningful parallels between Lingjing’s system and Middle Paleolithic technologies associated with Neanderthals in Europe and human ancestors in Africa. That comparison, Zhao says, suggests advanced technological thinking was not confined to western Eurasia.

The study’s bottom line is that East Asian populations showed no technological lag compared with contemporaries in Europe or Africa during the Middle Pleistocene.
