Ronaldo was briefly present at Eleda Stadion in Malmo before returning to the team hotel. Portugal’s federation explained that the venue did not have the specialist equipment needed for his planned recovery work.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward had also been an unused substitute in Portugal’s victory over Norway. His absence from normal group sessions has raised questions over his role against Denmark, but there is no official indication that he has suffered a fresh physical problem.
Denmark expect Ronaldo threat
Denmark coach Brian Riemer has rejected suggestions that Ronaldo should move aside from the Portugal set-up. Riemer believes the forward remains far more important than many observers recognise, particularly in holding together the leadership structure within the squad.
Riemer said Portugal could face a significant hierarchy issue when Ronaldo eventually ends his international career, describing the captain as a key figure keeping the group connected.
Denmark full-back Joakim Maehle, who has played against Ronaldo four times, said Portugal’s attack changes when the veteran starts. Maehle sees Goncalo Ramos as a more mobile and energetic centre-forward, but warned that Ronaldo’s penalty-box quality remains decisive.
Maehle said Ronaldo can still punish opponents heavily on the right day, including with a hat-trick, and stressed that defenders cannot overlook his finishing despite his more stationary role.
What happens next: Portugal will assess Ronaldo’s readiness ahead of the Parken match. Denmark know his movement may not match Ramos’ intensity, but his record of four goals in nine career appearances against the Danes ensures he remains a major concern.
