De Zerbi Leaves Richarlison Decision to Tottenham Chiefs Ahead of Coventry
Roberto De Zerbi has told Tottenham’s hierarchy to handle Richarlison’s future, insisting he will not allow the Brazilian’s situation to distract from Monday’s Premier League meeting with Coventry City.
Asked whether Spurs could seek a fresh arrangement for the 29-year-old in the January window, De Zerbi pointed to chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and technical director Johan Lange.
“I do not know. It is no longer my problem,” De Zerbi said. “Ask Vinai or Johan. As the coach, I have to support the club, take the pressure and accept responsibility, even for matters I did not decide.”
Richarlison played for Tottenham’s Under-21 team in midweek and has continued to air concerns over his treatment at the club on social media. De Zerbi said there was no personal issue between them, adding that the forward knows where to find him if he wants a direct conversation.
“I am in my office from 8.30 in the morning until the evening,” the Spurs boss said. “I have no problem with anyone, but I do not want to keep speaking about this. My attention is on Coventry and improving the team.”
Spurs seek first league win
Tottenham are 19th in the Premier League and still without a victory, placing major pressure on De Zerbi ahead of the home fixture. The squad recently travelled to Marbella for a bonding break, with the manager demanding an immediate response in front of their own supporters.
De Zerbi said his side showed resilience in Manchester, particularly after going down to 10 men, but wants that mentality on display from the opening whistle against Coventry.
“We showed character in Manchester in the hardest period, after the red card,” he said. “Now we have to show it from the start, at home and with our fans. If we want to, we can change this season’s story.”
Lampard’s Coventry arrive in form
Coventry, promoted from the Championship under Frank Lampard, travel to north London in 14th place after consecutive wins. De Zerbi praised their energy and technical quality, highlighting Cherif among players he knows well.
“They had a fantastic Championship campaign last year and they are a good side,” De Zerbi said. “They play with energy and quality. But we are Tottenham. We must stay humble and prove we are good enough to win, especially when we deserve to win.”
