Ewan McGregor Teases Obi-Wan Kenobi Return Idea to Lucasfilm
Ewan McGregor says he still has ideas for returning to Star Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi, even after years of divided reactions to his Disney+ series. The actor recently discussed what he pitched to Lucasfilm’s leadership and how ongoing projects may determine whether Obi-Wan can be brought back again.
McGregor wants to re-enter Obi-Wan’s story
McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy and returned decades later for his own Disney+ show. That series is set well before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, during Obi-Wan’s exile—after the character’s death in the original films, leaving room for additional stories between the prequels and the classic timeline.
A conversation with Dave Filoni sparked new pitches
While speaking during the Edinburgh International Film Festival, McGregor told Variety that his desire to revisit Star Wars remains strong. He also said he used a meeting with Dave Filoni—who became president of Lucasfilm earlier this year—to propose story directions that could enable another Obi-Wan return.
McGregor described the discussion as informal, adding that he believes a story could revolve around Obi-Wan trying to make contact with Yoda. He pointed to the fact that after the end of Episode III, Yoda is no longer nearby, suggesting there could be a narrative in which Obi-Wan reaches out across the galaxy.
Yoda connection is the clearest opening
McGregor’s Yoda idea hinges on the timeline: after Episode III, Yoda is elsewhere, and Obi-Wan would have had no contact with him. In McGregor’s framing, that separation creates a setup for Obi-Wan to pursue a reunion or communication.
A romance concept with Hera was raised but doesn’t fit
McGregor also floated an emotional idea involving Obi-Wan and Hera Syndulla, saying he became excited when Mary Elizabeth Winstead started working on Ahsoka. However, the concept is unlikely to align with the broader circumstances of Ahsoka, where Obi-Wan is already a Force ghost. Winstead plays Hera in Ahsoka, which takes place after the fall of the Empire.
How future Star Wars releases may decide Obi-Wan’s return
McGregor suggested that the feasibility of an Obi-Wan story connected to Yoda depends on how Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan plan their next steps. At the moment, he noted that a large part of what comes next appears tied to gauging the reception and direction of Ahsoka season 2 and the upcoming release of Star Wars: Starfighter.
With those milestones still ahead, McGregor left the central question open: whether fans will see his Obi-Wan Kenobi return again—and in what form—once the next stages of Star Wars production are clearer.
