Fortnite Active Trial Shrinks Storm Circles, Cutting Late-Game Rotation Time
Fortnite players are getting a notable shake-up to how late-game matches play out, with Epic rolling out an active trial that makes storm circles close faster than they do today. Early movement across the map won’t feel dramatically different, but Epic says the change tightens the window for repositioning as a match progresses—meaning you’ll have “less time to rotate late” when the endgame arrives. The goal is to shift match pacing so the final portions of a round feel more intense, while still leaving room for feedback on whether late rotations remain practical.
Epic is framing the update as an experiment and is explicitly asking players to weigh in. The Fortnite status account says it’s “an active trial” and invites the community to judge the pacing changes, including whether late rotations still feel doable. Players are also encouraged to share reactions to the switch-up while it’s live, suggesting the storm timing adjustment could be tuned further based on responses.
Storm behavior isn’t the only gameplay change in this battle royale trial. The battle bus route divers will find fewer pistols spawning around the world, while Shock Rocks are increasing in availability, dropping in double stack size for a maximum of four. Several weapons have also been adjusted to alter their roles and performance. Surgical Burst Rifles are receiving more damage, while Warforged Assault Rifles are being changed to act differently in the current meta, with the rifle becoming faster and more accurate. Bank Shot Pistols will appear more frequently and are dealing more damage, and the Mythic Rapid Fire SMG is getting a larger magazine capacity by holding more bullets per mag. The Mythic Ranger Pistol, meanwhile, is being rebalanced downward, with less overall damage.
Zero Build players also have a reason to pay attention: Guardian Shields have been identified as “grown too powerful” since their reintroduction, so they’ll now recharge slower and drain faster when fully charged. Together with the faster storm closure, the changes are likely to make passive endgame play—such as waiting too long in cover—far less forgiving, since the time pressure in late circles is increasing.
