GSC Warns Stalker 2 Players: Uninstall Mods Before Patch 2.0 Launch on Aug 20

With Stalker 2’s big Patch 2.0 arriving on 20 August 2026, GSC Game World is urging everyone using mods to disable and uninstall them before the update goes live. The reason: the patch includes a “massive, technical overhaul” that changes more than visuals, and older mod builds may break stability or tank performance.

Announcement: Patch 2.0 goes live on 20 August (mods warned against)

GSC Game World specifically recommends that players turn off and remove all mods before updating to Patch 2.0. The studio says the update is not limited to surface-level changes—there’s also significant work “under the hood,” meaning mod compatibility cannot be assumed.

The developer also notes that mod authors will need to adjust their work for the new patch. If “old modifications” remain enabled, the game can experience crashes and performance issues.

What changed (and why you should care)

  • Patch 2.0 adds a major technical overhaul beyond visuals.
  • Old mods may cause game crashes and worse performance.
  • Players should disable mods before updating on 20 August 2026.
  • Mod developers need to update their releases to work with Patch 2.0.

How to disable and uninstall mods

GSC’s guidance depends on how you installed mods:

  • Steam + Workshop: disable the relevant Workshop items.
  • In-game browser (mod.io): switch off each mod in the browser, then delete these folders on your PC:
    • C:\Users\Public\mod.io\5761
    • C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\mod.io\5761
  • Custom mods: delete Stalker2/Content/Paks/~mods.

Platform scope and what comes next

The same “turn off mods before the update” advice applies across platforms. Players on PS5 and Xbox should disable their mods in the in-game browser as well.

GSC also says it has been in close communication with active mod creators and authors of popular modifications. The mod team received an updated Zone Kit for testing and continues coordinating with Stalker 2 developers.

For mod authors and players, the studio recommends experiencing the new Unreal Engine 5.5.4 look in vanilla first, since some mod features (such as weather-related changes or offset aiming) may become unnecessary after the engine and kit updates.

Looking ahead, GSC plans to equip the Zone Kit in Phase 2 with an additional engine update, with more details for developers shared in the Stalker 2 blog.

Patch 2.0 is scheduled for release on 20 August 2026 alongside the major expansion Cost of Hope. If you’re planning to return to Stalker 2 around launch, start with a clean, mod-free run and wait for mod authors to publish Patch 2.0-compatible updates.
