Guerrilla Reboots Horizon Hunters Gathering as Traditional Co-op for 2027
A new report has confirmed that Guerrilla Games has restarted development on its upcoming cooperative multiplayer action title Horizon Hunters Gathering, aiming to strip out elements associated with “games as a service” and refocus the project on a more traditional, story-driven experience. The game—previously positioned for PS5 and PC—has also been pushed out to a 2027 release window.
Development restart and the shift away from a “games as a service” model
- In February, Guerrilla Games formally unveiled the next Horizon project as a service-style multiplayer game for simultaneous release on PS5 and PC.
- In March, the first PS5 and Steam beta for Horizon Hunters Gathering went live, which led to negative reactions from series fans.
- A new report states that development has been restarted to remove games-as-a-service elements and deliver a more conventional cooperative multiplayer experience with a stronger emphasis on the story.
- The restart is said to have begun at least as early as June, based on information from a source familiar with the situation within PlayStation’s Netherlands-based studio operations.
The updated direction is described as moving the game closer to the structure and feel of a Monster Hunter-style experience rather than a service-based model.
What the redesigned version is expected to emphasize
The renewed plan centers on three pillars: story, an online cooperative experience, and a reduced scope. While it remains a multiplayer-focused title, it is no longer expected to include the aggressive monetization structure that accompanied the earlier concept.
The report also notes a key deadline inside PlayStation management: Guerrilla reportedly has until December to demonstrate progress to executives, with the project at risk of cancellation if it fails to meet expectations—though it remains active for now.
In addition, some developers who were working on Hunters Gathering are expected to be reassigned to another project. That separate project is also described as being under evaluation in December.
Finally, the report reiterates that Guerrilla’s next main Horizon game has been in development for a smaller team, but it will still take several more years to reach completion.
Horizon Hunters Gathering is now expected to arrive starting in 2027 following the changes to its development and overall focus.
