Harry Kane Tops Ballon d'Or Race After Ronaldo Record

Harry Kane is the current favourite to win the Ballon d’Or in October, with the Bayern Munich and England striker in line to become the first English recipient of the award since Michael Owen in 2001.

The 33-year-old’s case rests on an extraordinary 73 goals for club and country last season. That total moved beyond Cristiano Ronaldo’s best single-season return of 69, recorded in 2011-12, and left only Lionel Messi’s 82-goal campaign above Kane in the all-time standings.

Kane said he was proud of what he had produced, while stressing that the final decision now belongs to those casting the Ballon d’Or votes. He reflected on his journey from being a supporter dreaming of a professional career to competing for football’s biggest individual honour.

Messi and Ronaldo were the standards Kane watched growing up, and he admitted their numbers once appeared impossible to reach. Kane called them the defining players of his era and said his own 73-goal tally still feels remarkable to him.

Kane targets more Bayern and England success

Rather than considering a decline at 33, Kane sees a route to extending his time at the top. He pointed to Messi, Ronaldo and Luka Modric as examples of players who have continued deep into their thirties, with Ronaldo and Modric now playing in their forties.

Kane believes mentality will be central to how long he can maintain that level. The striker remains driven by the trophies still available with Bayern and England, as well as by individual targets he has yet to reach.

Bayern opened their Bundesliga season with a 5-1 victory over Stuttgart before being held 0-0 by Schalke. Kane has not scored in either match, but his focus has already switched from last season’s record-breaking output to finding another level in the current campaign and beyond.

He said he wants to recognise what he achieved, but is already asking whether he can improve again in the seasons ahead.
