Harry Kane can match Peter Shilton’s England appearance record when the Three Lions face Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday, with the Bayern Munich striker in line to win his 125th cap.

The 33-year-old England captain would become the joint most-capped male player in the national team’s history if selected for the Nations League Group A3 match. Kane already stands alone as England’s leading scorer, having taken his international tally to 89 with two goals in the 7-0 win over Croatia during the latest break.

Record chase continues at Wembley

Tuesday offers Kane another landmark in a career packed with them. Before leaving Tottenham, he became Spurs’ all-time top scorer with 280 goals. Since joining Bayern in 2023, he has continued to tear through major scoring milestones.

In September, Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals in only 98 appearances, making him the fastest player to hit that mark in the competition’s history. The previous benchmark had lasted 49 years.

England go into the Czechia fixture second in Group A3 on six points, three behind leaders Spain. A home win is needed to maintain contact with the European champions at the top of the section.

Tuchel: Kane is driven by individual targets

Thomas Tuchel said Kane possesses the ruthless personal ambition common among elite centre-forwards, insisting great goalscorers are motivated by more than simply the team result.

The England manager said top number nines constantly measure themselves against scoring totals, assist figures, rival forwards and the next record available. He believes players of Kane’s calibre need those individual aims to push their standards higher.

Tuchel added that Kane has reached another level since taking on such a prominent role at Bayern, praising both his consistency and his influence away from the pitch. Kane is also on the Ballon d’Or shortlist as the ceremony approaches.

Now England need their captain’s goals again. Kane has a chance to share Shilton’s caps record at Wembley while helping Tuchel’s side keep Spain within reach in the Nations League race.
