Kompany blasts Olise after Bayern Munich’s 10-man draw in Norway
Vincent Kompany has branded Michael Olise’s sending-off “incredibly stupid” after Bayern Munich let a two-goal recovery slip away in Norway, drawing while reduced to 10 men.
Olise punished after clash with Tripic
Olise was dismissed in the 74th minute after throwing the ball into Viking captain Zlatko Tripic’s face. The Bayern winger had already received a yellow card for a tactical foul before the confrontation, leaving referee Georgi Kabakov to show a second booking.
- Tripic provoked Olise before the Bayern player reacted.
- The 24-year-old’s red card forced Bayern to see out the closing stages with one fewer player.
- Kompany said the incident had been discussed directly with Olise after the final whistle.
“The red card is incredibly stupid,” Kompany said. “We have spoken about it and our position is clear. The team is putting in the work, but that cannot happen.”
The Bayern coach said Olise recognised his mistake, but stressed that opponents will look to exploit such situations when the stakes rise.
“He understands it. You can see he regrets it,” Kompany added. “This was not a final or a semi-final, but moments like that can decide a season. I told Michael that number 10 was smarter than him. We cannot undo it now. Hopefully we learn from it and come back stronger.”
Early defensive errors leave Kompany frustrated
Bayern had fallen two goals behind after early strikes from Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen. Harry Kane and Luis Diaz helped the visitors fight back, but a late leveller denied them victory and exposed the game-management issues troubling Kompany.
The coach linked the display to Bayern’s recent Bundesliga setback against Augsburg, where his side conceded within eight seconds.
- Bayern allowed an early goal after around 90 seconds in Norway.
- Kompany believes concentration failures, rather than a lack of effort, are hurting his team.
- He also pointed to overconfidence and warned that Bayern are creating too many dangerous moments for opponents.
“The foundations are not that bad, but there were huge lapses in concentration,” Kompany said. “We were not clever against Augsburg when we conceded after eight seconds, and we were not clever here when we conceded so early. There was some overconfidence too. It feels like every opportunity becomes a goal, but that is no excuse because we are giving those situations away ourselves.”
What happens next
Bayern now turn their attention to a Bundesliga meeting with RB Leipzig. Kompany will expect a sharper defensive response as the title race intensifies, while Olise must wait to learn the consequences of his dismissal.
