Kristen Bell has officially joined the cast of the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 4, stepping into the role of Amy Rose—the pink hedgehog known for bringing the Piko Piko Hammer to every fight.

Amy Rose casting locked in for Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Kristen Bell, whose major screen credits include The Good Place, Veronica Mars, and Frozen, has signed on for the sequel. The film is currently set to arrive in March 2027.

Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz—who previously shared the screen with Bell on House of Lies—marked the news with a post on X. In it, Schwartz shared a photo of both actors holding figurines representing their respective characters. The message accompanying the image celebrated Bell’s arrival to the Sonic movie lineup.

What Amy Rose brings to the story

Amy Rose didn’t have a large role in the latest movie, but she did appear in the post-credits sequence of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In that scene, she takes on multiple Metal Sonic robots while using her Piko Piko Hammer.

Amy and Metal Sonic both first appeared in the video game series in 1993’s Sonic CD, which makes it a strong possibility that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will pull in recognizable elements from that entry.

Fans also know Amy Rose for her intense, often impulsive romantic pursuit of Sonic. Early portrayals leaned more into a damsel-in-distress dynamic in Sonic CD, but later games updated her into a more fully developed, independent character. That change shows up in titles such as Sonic Adventure, and continues in more recent releases like Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers.

Full franchise cast so far, plus Jim Carrey’s openness

Bell will join a franchise that has already featured Sonic performers including Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. On the live-action side, the series has also included actors James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Lee Majdoub.

As for returning faces in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, none of the previous cast members (aside from Schwartz) have been formally confirmed. However, Jim Carrey—who plays Dr. Robotnik—has said he is “definitely open” to coming back for another sequel.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hit theaters in December 2024 and turned into a major box-office success. It has only been outpaced at the high end of video game movie earnings by A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Platform scope and what comes next

This casting news doesn’t change where you can play the games, but it does line up with the franchise’s wider Sonic library that spans many systems. For reference, Sonic CD is listed across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, OUYA, PC, PlayStation 3, Sega CD, Windows, and Xbox 360. Sonic Frontiers is listed across Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Next up for movie watchers: watch for official announcements that confirm additional cast members beyond Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz, especially if Dr. Robotnik’s actor decides to commit to another run.
