Former Uruguay midfielder Gus Poyet has placed Suarez among the elite strikers of his era, alongside Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero. For Poyet, though, the Inter Miami forward holds a particular significance at home.
Poyet said Suarez embodies Uruguay’s obsession with football and its ruthless desire to win. He described the forward as a player who represents the country properly, adding that Suarez’s emotional connection with supporters sets him apart even within a group of outstanding modern No.9s.
Suarez left Nacional for Groningen in 2006 and quickly made an impact in the Netherlands, scoring 15 goals in one season before Ajax signed him. His scoring numbers rose year by year in Amsterdam, culminating in 49 goals during the 2009-10 campaign.
Liverpool paid £23 million, around $31 million, to bring him to Anfield in January 2011. Suarez struck 82 times in 133 appearances for the Reds and swept up both the FWA and PFA Player of the Year awards after a remarkable 2013-14 season.
Barcelona followed, reuniting him with Messi and placing him alongside Neymar in the feared MSN front line. Suarez scored 198 times for the Catalan club, with 59 of those goals arriving in 2015-16, as he helped deliver La Liga and Champions League success.
He has since reunited with Messi at MLS Cup winners Inter Miami. Retirement is considered increasingly close as his knees require careful handling, but Suarez remains productive and his Uruguay scoring record of 69 goals looks difficult to challenge for years.
Elsewhere among the leading forwards of Suarez’s generation, Lewandowski is now playing in the United States with Chicago Fire. Benzema is without a club after ending his deal with Al-Hilal, while Kane is in contention for the 2026 Ballon d’Or following 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England last season.
