Manchester United Demand Rapid Carrick Turnaround in Defining Run
Manchester United are giving Michael Carrick no immediate reprieve from pressure despite keeping him in charge, with the club demanding a rapid improvement through a defining run of matches in October and early November.
United’s early-season position
| Item | Figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Premier League position | 13th | United’s current standing |
| Recent league form | One win in six | Performances have repeatedly fallen flat for long spells |
| Carrick’s caretaker spell | January to May | He earned the permanent role before 2026-27 |
| Previous dismissals | October 2024 and early 2026 | Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim were removed mid-season |
The 45-year-old impressed enough during his interim spell from January until May to secure the full-time job ahead of this season. That initial confidence has quickly disappeared, however, after United’s poor start left them in the bottom half of the table.
Club executives are not expected to make an instant change, but Carrick needs results and sharper displays over the coming weeks to protect his position. United have already changed managers twice in a short period, dismissing Ten Hag in October 2024 before Amorim’s exit early in 2026.
Paul Scholes has questioned whether the strain of the role may already be taking its toll on his former United team-mate. The former midfielder said Carrick had done “all right” at Middlesbrough, though he felt more had been expected given the resources available there.
Scholes also wondered whether Carrick, whom he described as a good person, could privately be looking for a way out of Old Trafford amid the results and scrutiny.
Hurzeler linked as pressure builds
Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler has emerged as a possible alternative should United decide to act. The German has led Brighton to third place after an outstanding opening to the campaign.
Scholes rates Hurzeler highly but warned that success at Brighton does not automatically translate to the demands of United. He said the Brighton boss looks like “the real thing”, yet argued that every setback at Old Trafford is magnified.
Hurzeler does hold one advantage over Carrick, in Scholes’ view: a more established record in the Premier League.
Scholes directed his strongest criticism at the decision-makers above the manager, arguing United cannot continue returning to the same point after only a handful of games. He said attention should turn towards those responsible for recruitment and coaching appointments rather than repeatedly placing the blame on the head coach.
What happens next: Carrick’s future will be shaped by United’s response over the next month. Failure to lift performances and climb the league could force another boardroom decision, while another dismissal would intensify scrutiny of the executives who built the squad and selected its managers.
