Mohamed Salah Sets Trabzonspor Scoring Record After Flying Super Lig Start
Mohamed Salah has set a new Trabzonspor scoring mark after hitting four goals across his first three Super Lig starts, becoming the club’s first overseas player to reach that total since Opta’s records began in 2000-01.
The 34-year-old Egypt winger struck once and supplied an assist as Trabzonspor swept Genclerbirligi aside 5-0. Salah had scored three times in his first three league outings before the match, and his latest contribution underlined an immediate impact following his headline-making departure from Liverpool.
The milestone arrived only days after Salah and his wife Magi welcomed their first son, their third child. He has remained decisive through a turbulent opening period for the Black Sea club, whose early Europa League elimination by Ferencvaros triggered major change off the pitch.
Trabzonspor reset after Tekke exit
Fatih Tekke offered to resign after the loss to the Hungarian side, with Trabzonspor initially refusing to accept his departure. But a 2-1 Super Lig defeat against Amed SK followed, and club and coach then agreed to separate shortly before the Genclerbirligi win.
Salah was signed after Trabzonspor moved ahead of Besiktas in the race for his signature, with the board paying part of his wages in advance. His arrival drew huge crowds in Istanbul before he travelled east to join the squad at the Senol Gunes Sports Complex.
He has joined a group that includes former Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and ex-Manchester City centre-back Stefan Savic, with Trabzonspor expecting their new marquee forward to drive a renewed push for trophies and European progress.
Next comes the Europa Conference League group phase next month, while league meetings with Galatasaray and Besiktas are also approaching. Trabzonspor’s longer-term target is a first Champions League return since 2011-12, which could yet create an Anfield reunion with Liverpool next year.
Salah has admitted that facing the club he represented for nine years would be emotionally difficult. He said his affection for Liverpool, its city and supporters would leave him with conflicted feelings if the sides met.
