Mourinho Urges Real Madrid Teen Yan Diomande to Keep Improving
Jose Mourinho has urged Yan Diomande to keep developing despite the teenage winger’s decisive contribution in Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Sevilla.
Diomande created Arda Guler’s first goal before scoring himself to complete the rout, driving in from wide territory and firing a right-footed finish past the goalkeeper. The performance again showed the speed and power that have made the young forward a dangerous option on the break.
Mourinho sets high bar for Diomande
Mourinho, however, made clear that one standout display does not change the demands facing a player at the Bernabeu.
“He still has plenty to learn and plenty of scope to grow,” Mourinho said. “He is young, naive and not yet the finished article. At Real Madrid, the demands are extremely high.”
The coach also referred to the price attached to the winger’s move, saying Diomande is carrying far more than his squad number.
“Rather than wearing No. 25, he is wearing the 125 they paid for him,” Mourinho said.
Final-third work remains
Mourinho believes Diomande’s next step is to become calmer and more effective once he reaches scoring positions. The manager said the forward can arrive in dangerous areas but must improve his finishing, awareness and final pass.
“He gets into good positions but sometimes cannot stay composed at the decisive moment,” Mourinho said. “He has to make better passes and look up to recognise where his team-mates are.”
Mourinho is confident the winger will make those improvements, pointing to Vinicius Junior’s early years in Madrid as a reminder that elite attackers can take time to mature.
“He will get there,” he added. “I remember Vinicius when he first came to Madrid, and after two or three years he had become a top-level player.”
Diomande’s goal and assist against Sevilla give him fresh momentum as Real Madrid turn towards their next domestic fixtures and European commitments. The immediate challenge is to turn that explosive potential into consistent end product under the pressure of a major transfer fee.
