Paul Pogba Urges Manchester United to Give Michael Carrick Time
Paul Pogba has urged Manchester United to give Michael Carrick time, insisting the early pressure on his former team-mate is premature despite a miserable start to the Premier League season.
Pogba calls for patience with Carrick
The 33-year-old backed Carrick while attending the Singapore Grand Prix, arguing that United should not make judgments after only six league matches.
- United have won only once in the Premier League, with that victory coming against Ipswich Town.
- Points have been dropped against Hull City, Everton, Manchester City, Fulham and Tottenham.
- Brighton have already knocked United out of the Carabao Cup.
- The scrutiny intensified after the 1-1 home draw with Spurs, when United failed to protect their advantage after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off late on.
Pogba said: “It is only the beginning of the season. There is not much to say because the campaign is long. When he arrived last season, everyone said he was the manager who would change everything. Now results have not come, people are saying he may be too young.”
He added that the situation could turn quickly, saying United simply need to allow Carrick time and that “it will be fine”.
United need an immediate response
Carrick now faces a major challenge to halt United’s slide and deliver results quickly, with frustration growing around Old Trafford.
The Tottenham draw proved particularly damaging. United had the extra man after Bentancur’s dismissal but produced an unconvincing display and then allowed Spurs to claim a late equaliser.
What happens next is clear: Carrick needs a run of Premier League wins to ease the pressure and restore momentum after United’s league struggles and early cup exit.
Pogba watches City case and considers next move
Pogba also addressed Manchester City’s continuing financial case, joking that any heavy retrospective sanctions could yet alter his own honours list.
During his second spell at United, Pogba was part of sides that ended as Premier League runners-up under Jose Mourinho in 2018 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.
“I only hope it does not affect the Premier League,” Pogba said. “Hopefully we can get two titles.”
Free agent after Monaco exit
Pogba is currently without a club after Monaco and the midfielder agreed to end his two-year deal in August.
- His Monaco spell was disrupted by injuries.
- He made only six appearances during the campaign.
- The World Cup winner is now assessing his options as he looks for regular football and a chance to put his fitness problems behind him.
