Wesley Sneijder has backed Lautaro Martinez’s importance to Inter and tipped Cristian Chivu to thrive as the club’s coach, speaking during the Festival dello Sport in Trento.

The former Inter midfielder said Martinez’s commitment to the Nerazzurri sets him apart, comparing the Argentine striker’s bond with the club to that of Javier Zanetti. Sneijder also pointed to the forward’s aggressive edge in front of goal.

“Lautaro loves Inter in the same way Zanetti did,” Sneijder said. “He has the face of a ruthless striker, and that already gives him half a goal.”

Martinez, 29, has started the season with four goals and one assist from five matches in all competitions. His form and leadership remain central to Inter’s domestic and European targets.

Chivu backed for Inter role

Sneijder played alongside Chivu during Inter’s trophy-laden period and believes his former team-mate has the character required for the San Siro job. He joked that Chivu has become too busy to answer his messages, before praising the Romanian’s connection with the squad.

“He looks made to coach Inter,” Sneijder said. “I did not expect him to sprint 100 metres to celebrate with the players beneath the curva. He may be a little older, but he is still the same person inside.”

Sneijder added that Chivu will have to judge how a lengthy break affects his players, while also ensuring Inter are not repeatedly forced to chase matches from behind.

What happens next

  1. Martinez remains with Argentina for their fixture against Benin, billed as Lionel Messi’s farewell international appearance.
  2. After international duty, the Inter striker is due back for the weekend meeting with Parma.
  3. Chivu’s management of the squad following the break will come under focus as Inter resume their campaign.
