Remastered story set in the North

Legacy Edition updates The Lord of the Rings: War in the North with modern platform availability while keeping the original action RPG structure. The plot takes place while Frodo and Sam push toward Mount Doom, but away from the main route of the Fellowship of the Ring—meanwhile, a new danger is gathering in the North.

At the center of that threat is Agandaur, a Black Númenórean working for Sauron. He has assembled a large force among the ruins of Fornost, and stopping him requires forming a new company. The game’s playable roster consists of three heroes who can be alternated throughout the campaign: Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger specializing in bows and swords; Andriel, a Wise Elf who uses healing magic and area attacks; and Farin, a Dwarf Champion known for toughness and strong close-quarters combat.

Co-op, progression, and combat helpers

The adventure can be played with two additional players, with cooperative options available both online and in shared-screen co-op. The three hero roles are designed to complement each other during encounters, letting teams lean into ranged damage, healing and crowd control, or durable melee pressure depending on the fight.

As a role-playing game, progression allows characters to be customized using abilities alongside weapons, armor, and equipment—supporting a build tailored to individual playstyles.

During battles, players can also call in Beleram, a large eagle that attacks enemies from above and can influence the outcome of engagements.

Familiar Middle-earth locations and darker conflict

Legacy Edition includes well-known Tolkien characters and settings as the journey unfolds. Players can encounter Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond, while visiting locations such as Rivendell, Lórien, the Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood.

Narratively, the game leans into a harsher view of Middle-earth, emphasizing brutal battles and a more severe portrayal of resistance against Sauron’s forces.

Enemies from dark magic and the North’s worst horrors

Combat pits the party against orcs, trolls, wargs, and Wights, plus additional threats tied to Agandaur’s dark influence. These include shadowy creatures and winged beasts, rounding out a roster of adversaries meant to match the remastered adventure’s grim tone.
