Vitinha Urges Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus to End Portugal Rift
Vitinha has called for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Portugal duty and for the row with head coach Jesus to be settled, speaking after scoring in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-2 Champions League win away to Manchester City.
The PSG midfielder struck his team’s third goal in Manchester, then addressed the Portugal turmoil with a clear appeal for unity. Vitinha said the international window had been emotionally charged and that the squad wanted the captain back once the situation was resolved.
Quick facts
- Vitinha scored PSG’s third goal in a 4-2 Champions League victory at Manchester City.
- Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway.
- The forward left the Copenhagen training camp before the Denmark match.
- Portugal placed Ronaldo under provisional suspension on October 9.
- A possible ban of one to six months and a substantial fine are available under federation regulations.
Ronaldo’s dispute with Jesus began after he remained on the bench against Norway despite warming up for around 30 minutes. The forward believed he had been told he would be used during the match.
In a statement issued on October 6, Ronaldo said the manager had gone back on assurances made in private talks. He also claimed Jesus did not provide a promised explanation during the post-match press conference.
The veteran then departed Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen before the meeting with Denmark. Ronaldo later apologised to his international team-mates, but the Portuguese Football Federation treated the matter as an urgent disciplinary case and imposed a provisional suspension three days later.
Federation rules allow for lengthy sanctions when a player fails to report or remain available for international duty. Ronaldo could face anything from a one-month suspension to a six-month ban, as well as a major financial punishment.
There has been no public breakthrough between Ronaldo and Jesus, leaving Portugal’s plans for next month’s fixtures under pressure. Vitinha now returns to club duty, with PSG due to host Barcelona in the Champions League next week.
