WhatsApp iPhone Beta Adds Prompt to Turn On Channel Notifications by Default

WhatsApp is changing how it informs iPhone users about notifications for Channels: in the iOS beta, a new prompt appears right after you press the button to follow a Channel, reminding you that Channel notifications are turned off by default.

The underlying behavior of Channels doesn’t change. When you follow a new Channel, WhatsApp still automatically keeps its notifications disabled. What’s different is the timing of the reminder: instead of waiting for you to find the setting later, WhatsApp surfaces an alert immediately after you hit the “follow” control.

What the new prompt does

After you start following a Channel, the follow button is temporarily replaced with a message stating that notifications are off. From the same spot, you can enable notifications right away—without having to hunt for the relevant option inside the Channel’s settings.

Why WhatsApp is pushing this reminder

WhatsApp’s choice to silence new Channels by default is meant to prevent a fresh follow from instantly turning into another notification stream. However, the company’s approach can create a downside for heavy Channel users: if you follow many Channels, you may forget to manually check updates, which can reduce how often you actually see published content.

The new warning is positioned as a compromise—WhatsApp still won’t enable notifications without your consent, but it aims to make the setting more visible at the moment you’re most likely to care about that Channel’s updates. Users who want every new post can change the default behavior immediately, while those who prefer checking the “Updates” area manually can ignore the suggestion.

At the moment, the prompt is confirmed for a subset of iOS beta testers, and WhatsApp is rolling it out gradually on the server side. The company hasn’t announced when it will be available for everyone on the stable version.
