Rockstar: GTA VI PS5 Download Codes Region-Locked

Rockstar has confirmed a new snag for players preparing to buy Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5: download codes will be region-locked. On Xbox Series X|S, the same codes won’t have that restriction. Rockstar also warned PlayStation users to avoid boxed codes purchased from retailers in countries that don’t match their account region, citing potential “activation problems.”

Announcement: PS5 download codes are region-locked

Rockstar says GTA VI PS5 download codes are subject to the same regional limitation that typically applies to PlayStation Store codes—and that this also extends to codes bought at retail. In practical terms, a code purchased in one region may not successfully activate on a PS5 account set to a different region.

Xbox Series X|S players, meanwhile, will not face this region restriction for download codes.

Practical impact: boxed codes from the “wrong” region may fail

Rockstar specifically cautioned PlayStation customers against purchasing boxed download codes from countries that don’t line up with the region of their PSN account. The company notes this mismatch can lead to activation problems, effectively blocking access even if the code is otherwise legitimate.

Rockstar provided a breakdown of which countries’ codes are intended to work with which account regions:

Japan also has a separate limitation: product codes there will expire 170 days after the issuance date. Rockstar ties the issuance date to the launch date of November 19, 2026, meaning the time limit is driven by regional regulation. Rockstar did not explain why Japan’s codes have this deadline.
