Minecraft Java Edition Updates PC Specs: Vulkan 1.3 and Higher RAM Targets

After more than 17 years of continuous updates, Minecraft Java Edition has received a fresh hardware bar: Mojang has raised both minimum and recommended PC requirements, including higher RAM targets and a new expectation that your graphics hardware supports Vulkan 1.3. The change arrives with clearer performance goals—resolution, frame rate, and graphics presets—so players can better match their system to what the game will target.

Updated minimum and recommended specs for Java Edition

Mojang’s updated requirements were posted as of July 21, 2026. For the “Recommended” configuration, Mojang targets 1080p at 60 FPS using the Fancy graphics preset. For “Minimum,” the target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings.

Minimum (1080p / 30 FPS, Fast)

  • Windows 10 64-bit, Windows on ARM, macOS 12+, or Linux 64-bit
  • 8GB RAM with a discrete GPU
  • 12GB RAM when using integrated graphics
  • CPU with at least four physical cores

What happens if your PC is below the new minimum?

Mojang says Java Edition may still start on systems below the updated minimum requirements, but it will no longer guarantee proper performance or visual quality. Players may see low frame rates and longer loading times.

Why Mojang is raising the bar now

Mojang’s Java Edition hardware update is tied to the game’s long-running evolution—more complex world generation and simulation demands, along with additional mobs and ongoing engine modernization. The studio also points to a major technical transition: the shift away from OpenGL toward Vulkan rendering.

Java Edition originally used OpenGL, but Mojang says the older API has become increasingly difficult to maintain and modernize. Vulkan, in contrast, is expected to support stronger graphical capabilities and provide a better foundation for further updates. As a result, the revised baseline now requires Vulkan 1.3 compatibility by default, which may exclude some older GPUs that lack proper Vulkan 1.3 support.

Players can still use Bedrock if Java has issues

Mojang notes that many players already running Minecraft Java Edition without issues may not notice immediate changes. If problems do occur, Bedrock remains available as an alternative.

The bigger long-term impact, Mojang’s update implies, is compatibility as Vulkan adoption expands. For players on older hardware, the practical risk is not that the game suddenly won’t launch, but that future renderer changes could further limit who can run Java Edition with acceptable performance.
