Star Fox Challenge Mode: Ranked Expert Challenges and Boss-Slaying Tips

Star Fox’s Challenge Mode is built around brutal “no room for error” runs, with missions that span from manageable to outright punishing. A major frustration is simple: there are no checkpoints, so if you fail—especially during boss encounters—you must restart the entire level. Below is a ranked look at several of the hardest Expert Challenges, along with the specific approach used to clear them.

7. Bolse: destroy the Bolse Core without getting hit by its lasers

One of the most repeatedly flagged Expert Challenges demands a clean boss run: destroy the Bolse Core while taking zero hits from its lasers. Other sources of damage are allowed.

The recommended approach is to fight the core from long range. Take out one or two panels, then immediately use ZL or ZR to tilt/boost away to create space before repeating. Bombs are also part of the plan—use three bombs on the core to damage multiple panels at once. The strategy becomes easier after Star Wolf is defeated because Wolf can otherwise chase you and disrupt your timing. If you’re struggling, avoid stacking this with a different challenge that asks you not to destroy any laser cannons, since a laser upgrade is present in one of the laser turrets.

6. Area 6: destroy the first 12 Umbra-Class Defense Stations

At the start of Area 6, the Umbra-Class Defense Stations appear as large red spinning discs. The key is to hit the brake immediately, then shoot the center area with your lasers while waiting for enemies on the left to close in. Once they’re near, destroy the disc with a bomb to obtain a laser upgrade.

For stations that bunch up, use bombs and charged shots from distance, then rely on rapid close-range input when threats get in close. This challenge is expected to take multiple attempts and involves heavy button pressure—holding B while mashing A is repeatedly called out as exhausting. If you use a Switch 2 Pro Controller, remapping GL or GR to B is suggested to make the required inputs more manageable. Bomb placement matters: you can sometimes hit two stations at once by aiming between them.

5. Venom 2: defeat Andross without taking damage

This Expert Challenge is described as tougher than it initially looks, but it becomes more consistent once the flow is learned. The method starts with movement decisions to reach Andross, alongside picking up two laser upgrades to maximize damage. Immediately destroy Andross’ left hand, then be ready to brake during his inhaling phase and take out the right hand when he stops.

During the fight, Andross’ eyeballs trail red effects that can damage you, so the advice is to fly high. Watch the radar closely because the brain can ram directly into you. Brake and use tilt turning to shoot the eyes quickly; their movement can feel random, making this phase trial-and-error. Barrel rolls can help repel incoming fire, and somersaults can help avoid attacks entirely. After the eyes are down, shoot Andross’ brain to force a teleport—ideally at an angle that exposes his core—then approach from below to finish him while avoiding or shooting red pellets as they come in. The run likely requires multiple attempts. There is also a separate challenge focused on defeating Andross without letting him teleport, and it’s recommended to do those as separate runs because preventing teleporting can make it harder to line up the necessary damage angle.

4. Aquas: score 100 hits before taking damage

In Aquas, the Blue-Marine’s slow movement makes it vulnerable, and the challenge becomes a test of timing and survivability rather than raw damage. The strategy emphasizes barrel rolls: after each roll, there’s a brief window of vulnerability, and getting hit during that instant is a common cause of failure.

Players are encouraged to keep firing lasers and torpedoes continuously—mashing X and A—while still finding openings through movement. Constant braking can create more time to shoot targets, but it’s difficult because it requires holding B while mashing other inputs. The challenge is also described as compounded by other Aquas Expert requirements, with the overall segment being exhausting and time-consuming, and the repeated input demands are said to be tough on hands. Similar to other challenges, button remapping on a Switch 2 Pro Controller is suggested as a potential fix for the input load.

3. Corneria: defeat the Granga within 10 seconds

Even though Corneria is an early mission, this Expert Challenge is highlighted as extremely difficult for its time pressure. The lack of checkpoints is again the defining punishment: failing the 10-second requirement means replaying the entire level every attempt.

The recommended plan relies on hyper lasers. When the fight begins, hold the brake and destroy one of Granga’s legs, then fly past it briefly. After that, perform a sharp turn back and attack the back side. Success depends on both timing and luck, but the core idea is to create a fast opening that lets you finish before the timer ends.

2. Solar: get 6 bombs

Solar stands out because it’s described as the most RNG-dependent challenge. Even with good play, getting six bombs in a single run can still take a wide range of time—anywhere from about 30 minutes to as long as two hours.

The plan is to keep health as high as possible by shooting rocks and birds and collecting as many rings as you can. With high health, ROB64 is more likely to grant either a laser upgrade or bombs. One early bird enemy can drop a laser upgrade if shot quickly, and with sufficient health you can at least secure two bombs from ROB64 supply drops. The remaining four bomb drops are tied to bird enemies; rocks do not drop bombs. A bird that often chases Slippy is particularly noted for bomb drops. The odds improve further if lasers are upgraded twice, which is made possible by shooting bird enemies early and using bombs to clear large groups. Even with all that, the final outcome still involves luck.

1. Sector X: clear without taking damage

Sector X is ranked as the hardest Expert Challenge. While many of its tasks are manageable, this “no damage” clear is described as extremely unforgiving.

The run starts with boosted movement through early enemies by spamming barrel rolls left and right. When the Arwing reaches the yellow mines, players should use a bomb to clear them instantly. Barrel rolling continues to repel fire from the square turrets, and a laser upgrade is obtained by shooting three yellow enemies inside the next area.

From there, careful navigation is required. Players are advised to destroy a white and yellow butterfly enemy before it ends the run with its projectile. A fork in the road requires choosing the right path and shooting a group of three enemies just before the split to pick up a second laser upgrade. On the right path, the strategy again focuses on spamming barrel rolls and firing charged shots at groups of square turrets, with an emphasis on staying unlucky-proof—hits from turrets can end the run.

Movement is also position-sensitive: staying toward the lower-left edge helps avoid collisions with enemies that spawn from the right side. Before the boss, another white and yellow butterfly enemy is handled quickly using a bomb.

The Spybot boss fight is described as especially punishing because a single mistake ends the run with no checkpoint recovery. First phase is relatively straightforward with hyper lasers intact. In the second phase, players must swoop off to the side to avoid a giant debris piece thrown by the boss. Even then, luck can decide whether the spinning vertical arm lines up safely at the moment it begins. If the player can position between the arms and fire hyper lasers at Spybot’s face quickly, the boss can be destroyed before it uses other attacks. But because the margin for error is so small, even a stray piece of debris can force a full replay of the level.
