SkyShowtime Sets 2026 Release for The History of Sound Starring Paul Mescal

SkyShowtime has set a release window for a new romantic drama, bringing The History of Sound to subscribers later in 2026. The film is led by Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor and is directed by Oliver Hermanus, with the story spanning the early 20th century as it blends wartime uncertainty, creative ambition, and an unexpected romance.

The feature, written by Ben Shattuck, follows Lionel (Mescal), a musically talented singer who leaves his family farm in 1917 to attend the Boston Conservatory of Music. There he meets David (O’Connor), a composition student whose musical path is interrupted when he is drafted near the end of the war.

By 1920, Lionel and David spend an entire winter traveling through Maine’s forests and islands, collecting popular songs with the goal of preserving them for future generations. As their journey continues, feelings develop between them, turning the trip into a passionate and unforeseen love story, even as the looming threat remains that both men may be called to fight in Europe.
