University of Silicon Valley Offers Up to $15K Scholarship for Gamer Achievements
The University of Silicon Valley (USV) has unveiled a merit scholarship designed for students who can turn extremely tough video game accomplishments into meaningful tuition help. Through the Max Achievement Scholarship, eligible learners can receive up to $15,000 each year toward annual tuition support, with consideration given to both PC and console achievement histories—ranging from rare trophies to long-running progression goals—alongside standard scholarship materials.
While gaming scholarships aren’t brand-new, they’ve often leaned heavily toward organized esports performance. USV’s Max Achievement Scholarship instead spotlights staying power and a deep understanding of how game systems work. That shift means solo achievements and completionist-style milestones can qualify even if an applicant doesn’t have a competitive background.
A separate accredited college course is also on the way that will explore history through the lens of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
USV’s New Scholarship Recognizes Exceptional Gaming Achievements
The Max Achievement Scholarship page lays out two undergraduate award tiers. “Legendary” scholarships can reach up to $5,000 per term, while “Mastery” scholarships can provide up to $2,500 per term. Because USV runs three terms each year, that places Mastery at up to $7,500 annually and Legendary at up to $15,000 per year. USV also describes how difficulty and rarity are expected to look at each level: Legendary accomplishments generally demand more than 500 hours of “sustained mastery” and come with global completion rates under 1%, while Mastery achievements are typically completed by between 1% and 5% of players worldwide.
USV’s ‘Max Achievement’ Gaming Scholarship Award Structure
$5,000 / term (3 terms / year)
Ultra-rare accomplishments that involve 500+ hours of sustained mastery across complicated game systems (typically).
$2,500 / term (3 terms / year)
Major completionist achievements that demonstrate advanced skill and persistence (typically with 1–5% global completion rates).
USV also maintains an older esports scholarship, but it cannot be stacked with the Max Achievement award. It can, however, be combined with other merit scholarships, though there are limits on the total amount a student may receive. The tier determines the ceiling for the Max Achievement award, but the final figure still depends on two additional factors: the applicant’s essay and their academic readiness. USV lists a wide range of eligible achievement categories, including MMORPG and live-service titles, trophy-hunting that’s tied to specific platforms, roguelikes and roguelites, soulslikes and “challenging action games,” strategy games, and games that emphasize “analytical mastery,” along with precision-focused challenges. Sandbox and survival games also fall under their own category.
USV’s benchmark examples include some of the toughest completion tasks. For instance, it cites collecting every Golden Strawberry in Celeste, reaching 112% completion in Hollow Knight, and earning every achievement across the Dark Souls trilogy. For MMORPG entries, the emphasis shifts away from one-off milestones and toward long-term, cumulative progression. For example, Final Fantasy 14 applicants are expected to level all 20 combat jobs and all eight crafting and gathering jobs to level 100. Similarly, Legendary-tier World of Warcraft submissions require players to max out all 13 professions and reach Exalted standing with at least 25 factions, among other requirements. Across categories, the common theme is proving sustained commitment and perseverance.

To apply, scholarship candidates must be incoming first-year students, transfer students, or graduate students who have already been admitted to USV. Applicants are required to submit transcripts, an achievement verification package, and an essay ranging from 500 to 750 words that discusses the specific mastery they’re submitting for consideration. USV states that achievement difficulty and rarity account for 60% of the overall evaluation, while the essay and academic potential each contribute 20%. Graduate students receive awards worth half of the listed undergraduate amounts. For availability, USV says applications are open online starting July 15, 2026, though the public scholarship page does not include a stated deadline.
