Analogue has released an update for its Analogue 3D FPGA-based Nintendo 64 system, adding 4K screenshot support plus a new gallery workflow—now allowing players to capture gameplay with the console’s original display processing.

Analogue 3D update version 1.4.0 adds 4K N64 screenshots

With firmware version 1.4.0, the Analogue 3D finally supports taking 4K screenshots of N64 gameplay. The update is designed to “capture, preserve, and share” moments as the Analogue 3D renders them using Original Display Modes.

Players can trigger an instant screenshot in two ways: by pressing the star button on an 8Bitdo N64 controller, or by using a real controller combination (Z + Start + R). Captured images are then viewable in a dedicated gallery.

Analogue says the capture process is more than a simple frame grab. Instead of only saving what’s currently on screen, the system retains an in-game frame that can be adjusted afterward using the same CRT filter and effect tools available during gameplay. When finished, the image can be exported to an SD card.

Why this screenshot workflow matters

The Analogue 3D’s approach targets a common problem when capturing retro footage: what looks correct on one modern monitor or TV may look different after exporting, filtering, or platform compression. By letting players tweak CRT-style filters and related effects after the moment is locked in, the update makes it easier to produce images that look consistent across displays and sharing scenarios.

The new feature also expands the console’s “Memories” concept, with the screenshot capture operating similarly to a save-state style workflow—freezing a frame for later refinement rather than forcing edits in real time.

Other changes in version 1.4.0

Beyond screenshots, version 1.4.0 also brings broader quality-of-life improvements to the system software. Analogue’s notes highlight additional OS visual polish, faster thumbnail loading, and fixes for d-pad navigation quirks. The update also addresses issues involving multiple Controller Paks in San Francisco Rush.
