A new role delivers immediate return

Usually seen in more advanced areas, Diouf was selected on the left of France’s defence alongside Pierre Kalulu, Jeremy Jacquet and Maxence Lacroix. The deployment was the result of Zidane’s planned experiment rather than a late tactical adjustment.

The Inter man has previously operated as an inverted wide forward, second striker and central midfielder. Against Belgium, however, he handled the defensive demands with assurance while retaining his influence in possession.

As well as his four successful tackles, Diouf made three clearances and maintained a 95% passing accuracy. His 35 completed passes in the attacking third underlined Zidane’s instruction for the player to keep advancing when opportunities appeared.

Inter work behind France switch

Diouf’s move towards a wider assignment has also been developing at Inter under Cristian Chivu. The coach outlined his plans in July 2026, saying he had “a crazy idea” to make Diouf a wide player because of his relaxed character and ability in one-on-one situations.

Diouf has accepted that his current positions are not necessarily his preferred ones. “At Inter too, I play somewhere that is not my natural role, but what matters is helping the team,” he said.

That willingness could give Zidane another option before France meet Italy in the Nations League on October 2, with Diouf now having shown he can contribute at both ends from the left side of defence.
