Arsenal recovered from a goal down to beat Leeds United and remain level with Manchester City at the Premier League summit on goal difference, with Riccardo Calafiori’s close-range equaliser sparking the turnaround at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta’s side had been under pressure after their 3-0 loss at Brighton before the international break, but responded with the resilience needed to avoid back-to-back league defeats for the first time in almost two years. Their next focus is the Champions League after domestic momentum was restored.

Leeds arrived in north London unbeaten in five Premier League matches and made life difficult from the outset. Their compact defending restricted Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, while Arsenal failed to convert promising first-half positions.

The visitors struck 10 minutes after the interval when James Justin punished a defensive mistake. Arsenal, with Ezri Konsa deputising for the injured William Saliba, had struggled with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s movement in the move leading to the goal.

Arteta changed the contest in the 63rd minute, sending on Jurrien Timber, Viktor Gyokeres and Bruno Guimaraes. The Arsenal manager said the substitutions brought leadership, attacking threat, duel-winning ability and a greater capacity to drive forward.

Calafiori soon levelled from close range, and Arsenal completed the comeback to keep their title defence on track.

Arteta praises Arsenal response

Arteta said his players had discussed the need to respect an unbeaten Leeds side and, after the Brighton setback, recover the standards that define the team.

“We wanted to put things right after Brighton and show what this group is about,” Arteta said. “We had to demonstrate that we have something distinctive.”

The Arsenal boss also credited Leeds for their physicality and commitment, saying they continued to threaten the box and had opportunities to cause damage before taking the lead.

He added that conceding in an early Saturday home kick-off required his side to restore both control and energy, with the replacements making a decisive impact. Arsenal now move on to European action with the gap at the top unchanged.
