Aston Villa begin talks to extend Emiliano Buendia contract
Aston Villa have begun contract discussions with Emiliano Buendia as they seek to secure the Argentine playmaker beyond his current 2027 expiry date.

Villa have the contractual right to add another season to Buendia’s existing terms, but the club want a fresh agreement that would keep him at Villa Park for longer.
The 29-year-old has become an increasingly important figure under Unai Emery, particularly through much of 2026, after fighting his way back into the manager’s plans. Buendia had initially taken time to find regular form following his move from Norwich City, where his performances had drawn attention from leading Premier League teams.
His persistence has changed his position at Villa. Emery praised the midfielder last year for the work he put in to rediscover his level.
“Everything that happened around him, he deserved it because he worked hard to recover his best form as a player,” Emery said.
The Villa manager also said he expected Buendia to deliver after both club and player opted to continue together.
“When we decided to keep him here, and he decided to stay here as well, I was confident he could get the numbers he is achieving,” Emery added.
Why Villa want a quick agreement
Protecting Buendia’s future has taken on greater importance after a difficult summer at Villa Park. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea, Ezri Konsa moved to Arsenal and Youri Tielemans signed for Manchester United, removing three major players from Emery’s squad.
Villa are now trying to limit further upheaval by retaining an established attacking option. The next step is for the club and Buendia’s representatives to turn the opening talks into a completed long-term deal, with Villa keen to reduce the scope for interest from potential rivals.
